Forgive me if my definitions are a little off. It's been a while since I've had a philisophical discussion on love in all its many flavors.
Eros is a deep, passionate, all-consuming love while agape is a pure and chaste love. Then we have amore, which is a love of another. So theoretically you could have eros amore or agame amore
As for why eros is the greatest of them all, agape infers that this is a love from afar with no action other than mooning over one's heart's desire. Eros, on the other hand is a love of action because how can passion possibly be inactive on its desires and longings? So Eros is the love that great stories are told about. Eros is the love of Romeo and Juliet, Sampson and Delilah, Maria and Ken, Harry and Sally and so many other great couples throughout the ages.

Though I'm not in general very jealous, one person brought out the green-eyed monster in me during the past year, and it quite rightfully drove her bats. Yes, I was a victim of jealousy and did all the wrong things to make myself feel better. Have learned a lesson that he who loves least has most control over one who is emotional and volatile. Don't like that lesson but it was true.
