This is the part of things that was - and still is - a very major concern and for obvious reasons and why incest is considered to be at the top of the taboo list; history is rife with examples where royalty - in particular - practiced incest as a matter of course in order to keep their royalty literally in the family even though birth defects - and bad ones - would crop up. I have never been incestuous. My elder sister and brother and I had too much edge and rivalry to even think of it. I think incest is more common than most people think, especially between cousins. I think it's natural for kids to explore and who more natural to explore with than the kids you grew up with? Indeed children of sibling relationships are only marginally more likely to develop problems commonly considered problems of incest. Problems tend to occur more where the gene pool is substantially reduced by frequent intermarriage and/or child production between close relations. It is for instance why haemophilia was found so frequently among the royal houses of Europe. Similarly but less seriously, the protruding Hapsburg jaw found in many of the royal houses of Spain and Austria was a result of such marriages and regular interbreeding.

What about step siblings? Step sons, step daughters? Relationships by marriage only? This seems to be popular and considered incest by marriage.

in some parts of the world it is allowed and in others not. In the UK parliamentary permission is required as it is for in laws to marry. There is no bar on step siblings or step anything or in-laws from having sex or cohabiting other than the laws in age of consent. Only marrying but, this can be overcome in the UK at least.

My elder daughter's best friend is now courting a lad whom her parents fostered for almost a decade. The boys mother, who has had little to do with him since he was 6, and his grandparents have kicked up a row because of what they perceive as incest.
