to Dimmu Borgir (Death metal)
To John Williams (composer of orchestra music)
to metal, emo rock, punk
almost anything, but rap, the only rap songs i have in here came in a collection, and im not huge on rap, im not saying i wont listen to my partners rap, its just not a "turn on"

ummm I can sum it up with one word: Eclectic.
Basically I listen to everything but Rap, prefer country and rock not so much heavy metal but I love some Metallica and some KISS. That being said I do listen to Alice in Chains but only cause I know Jerry Cantrell and his sister Rahnveig.

A little bit of this and that..
Classical to the absolutely absurd.
Hard to the soft..
perverted to Christmas carols.
Everything.
Music is my favorite mood altering substance.

I have taken a liking to jazz recently. My father is a musician, and has a monster collection of old jazz records going back to the earliest days.
I used to be a big fan of the Ramones and other punkers in my youth, as well as early hip-hop (rode the double-dutch bus). In recent years my tastes have run more to old-school soul such as Millie Jackson, due mostly to a woman who is a fanatic for it.

my first tastes of music when I was little was bumpin my dads old vinyls. Foreigner and Michael Jackson were two I remembered the most.
I didn't get into much much growing up til around17-18, and Danzig got me into metal music. Then Marilyn Manson was popular in the 90s. I got into that and Nine Inch Nails. White Zombie, Metallica, etc.
Then I got into the whole 'rap rock' craze of the 90s, though now I don't care for a lot of those bands. I still love Kid Rock. I started being more open about country and rap and blues after being a fan of his. Though I still am MUCH pickier about those genres.
I like OLD country and alternative country most. and especially the ones that border on being rock almost. Bourbon Crow, Hank 3
I like some of the older rap. especially the darker 'goth' tinged stuff, like old Bone Thugs or currently Tech N9ne
I love some old blues, like BB King and John Lee Hooker. modern blues rockers like Everlast or the late Stevie Ray Vaughan
i occasionally listen from everything to Prince to Europagan folk music (the kind with harps) to Bryan Adams or even some classical. I try to be open to new things, though I know what I like.

It’s a good thing, to have a varied taste in music and eclectic is an excellent word, to describe the diverse musical likes and dislikes of an individual. I was once told that my taste in music was eclectic.
If it is, fine......but I just like, what I like and there are some things, which I call music, that others might not.
I like whale song. It is so beautiful. I love Latin plainsong. Plainsong is very relaxing and a good aid to meditation. I like African, Arabic and Indian music....not all....it depends upon what is pleasing to the ear. Virtually any medieval music and when it comes to classical, mostly just what I like, when I hear it, unless it is Mozart. Mozart reigns supreme.
I guess that most of all, I like blues, blues and more blues, especially the early stuff. I discovered Leadbelly (Mr Huddy Leadbetter), when I was 11, as my brother had a long play vinyl disc. Yet I do believe that I liked blues, long before that time.
I still like the Monkees, especially their later work, where Mike Nessmith had a big influence. I like him a lot. Wish I could have found a recording of him and his First National Band. Lennon, Lennon and more Lennon (not a great fan of McCartney), and a whole load more from than era.
I loathed Dylan, until about 6 years ago. Then one day, in some shop, they were playing some Bob Dylan and I stopped and listened to it and decided I liked him. Took me a long time to get there, but I am glad that I did. I didn’t discover Leonard Cohen until about 18 months ago and now I am a big fan.
I mainly like voices, not too many bands, so Sting (and the Police), Tracy Chapman, K.D Lang, Annie Lennox, Lily Allen, Ian Dury (and the Blockheads), Patsy Clyne, Dolly Parton, Madness, Phil Collins, Carole King, Paul Simon (and Art), stuff from almost every decade in the 20th century.....so much and of course, Mr Robbie Williams!
Some things I do not like....opera (though I like a male tenor voice and in females, contralto..eg Kathleen Ferrier), Jazz...unless it is very early and more bluesy, Rap, Hip Hop, Heavy Metal, Folk (and by that I mean ‘’cultured in a petri dish,’’ folk), Michael Jackson, manufactured bands (although, I will admit to liking Westlife, because they can sing and the voice is everything to me)......almost all country and western and I don’t like many big band sounds...Glen Miller etc...though I don’t exactly hate it, either.
I like voices and voices singing acapella, which is how I sing and I like singing Blues and singing unusual things, Blues style.
I reckon there must be a ton of stuff I haven’t remembered.........Oh, yeah......Joe Cocker.....Yes, indeed.

My music tastes are varied. While my faves include Barenaked Ladies, Ani Difranco, Reel Big Fish, NIN, Hamell on Trial, TOOL, Etc you will find old school rap, dance, rock, techno, etc on my music player as well. What I listen to on any given day just depends on my mood.

lol Mine are so varied and weird that you wouldnt believe it! I love music of all kinds, except some rap. I love easy-listening, to wild and fun, Phil Collins, oldies like Creedence, Ventures, Challengers. Paul Revere and the Raiders(Who live up here in Wa state, along with the Wilson sisters from Heart). Johnny Rivers when I need some soft music. Enya when I'm in that mood. Ne-oh, Aerosmith, Wilson Pickett, Peter Gabrial, Kiss, Foreigner, Poco Harum. Daughtry, John Mayor and sooo many others.
Music is universal, Ya'll, so it doesnt matter how old you are, what matters is how the music makes you Feel inside.
Rock on, Loves. :}

A little bit of sugar may take the piss taste out of your corn flakes.
How do you know he didn't spend that much on his music .. purchasing through Itunes or add to his music by uploading his own CD's?
Do you know how much of a presumptuous ass you sound?

Oh Goonie, doesn't necessarily have to be illegal downloading, now, does it!? A lot of people research some really old recordings, that you wouldn't be able to get on CD. Personally, I don't have any music on my lap top (and I don't need an ipod). I prefer to buy CDs and if I want to play music, I use a stereo, but some people like to have music on a lot. I can't do that....I get irritated by it after too long. We're all different and whatever music we like, if it entertains us or makes us feel good, that's what is important. I see where you are coming from, but I reckon, that as long as music is downloaded legally, what's the problem? None that I can see.
Oh...I forgot Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison!

First time posting in awhile for me!!
I have an eclectic taste---for me--I still like a lot of the old classic rock stuff from the 60s and 70s---Cream, Humble Pie, Procol Harem, Mountain, Iron Butterfly, Grand Funk Railroad, Steppenwolf, early Eric Clapton, Santana to the early heavy metal stuff like Black Sabbath. Later I got into the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, America, Jackson Browne and also Southern Rock like the Allman Brothers, .38 Special, Sknyrd, Marshall Tucker and the rest.
Been a long time fan of Jimmy Buffett---the source of my name on here BTW.
Always liked classic, Be-Bop jazz---and old school blues.
Over the years I have come to like not only New Orleans style music, but music from the cajun bayous along with Texas Swing and Tejano/ranchero music.
Came to like the stuff out of Cuba after Ry Cooder did his "Buena Vista Social Club" project, bringing the music of those incredible musicians to the attention of the world before they all faded away.
I like some forms of Rasta/reggae music--mostly Bob Marley and his "Roots, Rock, Reggae" style.
Like alt country/Americana/Bluegrass these days a good bit.
I do like the old stuff too--some Sinatra is good too.
I liked "Rap" in the early days but haven't liked it much since it became harder edged--I sure don't like the gangsta rap and the hip-hop stuff where the guy talks about his bling-bling, his cribs, his Escalades and his booty shaking 'ho's!!
I do like a number of the more recent rock bands too like Green Day, Coldplay and others.
My list is not all-encompassing--just an idea of the sorts of music styles, bands and individual musicians I like.

as for the above comment about 'illegally downloading', most of the songs downloaded are not from local artists that are THAT hard-up.
and the smaller of those artists gain added exposure from filesharing that they might not get from the radio who only plays clones of a few select sounds. I've BOUGHT albums from bands I only heard through filesharing. I damned sure wouldn't have heard it on the radio. And the smaller musicians also make more money off merchandising and other revenues than CD sales. I still do buy albums when I have enough money to spare.
And the bigger name musicians, I'm not boo-hooing if Lars Ulrich or Dr Dre have to wait an extra week to get gold trim for their luxury liners. Sorry. I could care less.
The main people losing money off CD sales are the execs, and they need to look at themselves and their shitty trends they push before targeting the little guy. Maybe fewer people buy albums now because less must have albums come out from mainstream artists and most people are too lazy to look beyond what they are exposed to. Even good artists, if they are picked up by a major label, it seems, are pressured to put out hit singles on what are otherwise lame to mediocre albums, and a lot of this is due to label pressure bullshit from assholes in the "indu$try" who care FAR more about money than music.
Screw the indu$try. They've done too much damage anyway. I could give a fuck less about them.

I still prefer to buy a "good old fashioned CD!" or better yet--VINYL since so many artists are putting them out now!!!
Today--I buy most of my CDs from the last remaining Indie record shops, at some online venue of the bands or at their shows. These days it does seem--so many groups have gone and created their own labels now market and sell "product" they actually have total control over since they often self-produce the work.
I do hate the record companies and the RIAA--they say they are all about protecting the musicians, writers, etc. but all they care about is their bottom line and ironically enough--I think that the "industry" itself has done more to bring the downfall of recorded music than any other means.

oh, i love to buy CDs, but with what I make now, i dont have the money to RISK buying a CD because i heard one or two songs off it. lol. hence filesharing. and to be honest, if I'm going to spend my hard earned cash on something music related nowadays, I'd rather spend it on either a local show or t-shirt or something.
for me, that's my bottom line. If I have more money to spend, and find a better job, most likely more of my income will go to buying a few albums now n then. but music should be somewhat universal anyway. If by listening to downloaded songs, it inspires me to buy concert tickets, the band still gets their money

Welcome Back Voltie-honey!
And if you want a good deal on Excellent Vinyl, let me know. My Ex-Husband has been forced to close his and his partner's record shop in Calif. They were doing wonderfully there for a while because people were going back to lp's, but it all of a sudden fell off...so they are closing their doors.
Let me know if any of you would like their number. They can ship anywhere in the country..
Sorry to see the music go..

in my ipods, on the shelves at home, in the office, as well as the car; classic rock, doors, canned heat, janice joplin, jefferson airplane, credence, steppenwolf + others; then, rat pack with an emphasis on frank and dean, bobby darin, harry belafonte, nat king cole, peggy lee + others; new wave artists; enya, steeleye span, fairport convention; anything irish; classical with a prefrence for medieval (include gregorian chant) renaissance, and barogue; the big band swing artistis of the 40's; and finally, jazz of anykind, with a emphasis on the West Coast artists. any and all of the above, in no particular kind of order! largely depends on the mood i am in at the time!

Eclectic as well, most recently I've been hooked on Shinedown, the vocalist has soul. Some of the rest I listen to:
Accept
Zep
Rush
Ozzy
Dio
Dokken
Leppard
WhiteSnake
Priest
Maiden
Danzig
Styx
Twisted Sister
Suicidal Tendencies
STP
GunsfookinRoses
Genesis
Buster ------ (Phil Collins ... his wife calls him Buster. My mom cleaned for an elderly lady once who was related to them by some means, he would visit her once or twice through out the year. I actually met him to the name of 'Davey'. She was loony old bird, guess the Davey thing was meant as expressing him to be Brit. Dunno.)
Lots of various Classical tripe, not really into one particular composer. Just like good music, like what I like because I do.
I've grown away from most country music. Still like some of the old Classic stuff in small doses.
Johnny Cash
Hank Sr.
George Jones
In general I'm a metal head but can listen to anything save for Rap, Ska.

lol no, at least 98% of the stuff on my ipod is 100% payed for, the other apx 2% are free tracks from online sites to people who post their own works directly online for people to download, either because htey love to share it, or more likely their looking for popularity
of the bought stuff the majority is bought directly from the Itunes store the rest is from cds i've had long before itunes or ipods where ever a twinkle in (enter apples ceo name here)'s eye
im an aspiring author, so copyright infringment and art theft does not jive with me, and downloading free mp3's illegal is nothing less than art theft, no matter how bad i think the song is ;P

Just about everything except death metal and hard core rap.
As a composer, I tend to work in classical, alt rock, folk rock, new age, and electronica. I also do contemporary "world music" arrangements of traditional tunes, including a large repertoire of Irish-Gaelic songs. I've even done a rap version of "Greensleeves," but that's probably too traumatic to share...which I can't, because I can't afford to get it recorded and I can't afford the equipment to record it myself. Stupid capitalism... ;)
This seems to be the recurring theme of my life: Everything I want to do - film, music, theater - costs money that I don't have. Fine. When I die with all of my major works unmade, the rest of you will have to live with the resulting cultural deprivation!
Um, whatever...

Classical - especially 18th century and earlier, but I also love Beethoven, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, some other 19th century. Also some Copeland and some other 20th century. (Top three composers on my list: Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven - and Mozart and Beethoven are tied for second. They actually inspired me to try my hand at composing - not that I do it well, but I enjoy it.)
Jazz - oh, yeah, baby!
Blues - as far as I'm concerned, the root of modern American music today.
Bluegrass - there are some kickin' musicians there
Oh, and throw in some folk, some rock, celtic, latin, R&B, zydeco, world, others that I am forgetting but will get lost into if on the radio...
Peace

Really eclectic - soft rock/folk (Ben Folds, KT Turnstall, Patty Griffin, The Whitlams, Brooke Fraser, The Corrs, Jewel, Bic Runga etc), R'n'B/Soul/Hip Hop (Lemar, Gorillaz - do they count?? - Lauryn Hill, Lighthouse Family), Dull British People Talking Shit In Cool Accents (The Strokes, Kate Nash, Lily Allen), BritPop/EuroPop (insert almost any cheesey 90's pop craze here), the Gay Canon (Queen Madge, Kylie Minogue, Cher, Steps etc), Glam Rock (The Darkness, Queen, Scissor Sisters, David Bowie), Humour (Flight of the Conchords, Weird Al, Arlo Guthrie) and pretty much anthing else on classic rocks stations, most notably Elton John & Billy Joel, Annie Lennox & The Eurythmics, even bloody Neil Sedaka. I've been through a lot of phases. About the only genre I don't like is Gangsta, and possibly Grunge (it's a bit emo) :)
Ooo! And I really should add I listen to a fair bit of incidental/soundtrack music too - James Horner, Clive Mansell, Danny Elfman, Murray Gold etc, as well as having a fondness for Tchaikovsky from my younger days :)
