View Full Version : Texas GOP- Seriously?!?

This from the Texas Republican Party Platform-

Marriage Licenses – We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple
and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such.

Homosexuality – We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown
of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the
fundamental, unchanging truths that have been
ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans. Homosexuality must not be
presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should “family” be redefined to
include homosexual “couples.” We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, refuse to recognize, or grant
special privileges including, but not limited to: marriage between persons of the same sex (regardless of state of origin),
custody of children by homosexuals, homosexual partner insurance or retirement benefits. We oppose any criminal or civil
penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values.

A felony? Seriously? Thats like saying letting two folks of the same sex marry is on par with stealing a car, selling child pornography, or murder.

I do realize that not everyone in the republican party signs on to this , but seriously? Texas queer republicans have some work to do in their party.

I read the last line of what you posted from the article, marie....and either I am reading it all wrong.... or they are saying that they will exempt anybody from criminal proceedings, if they oppose LGBT people on the grounds of faith, conviction or family values.....

no matter what way I read it...... they are saying, I could kick the shit out of a lgbt person and claim its cos god told me to, so I would be exempt from the law.....

please tell me that I have misread or misunderstood that

Wish I could say that. But, I read it the same way...

Personally, I can only hope and pray that Texas votes for Democrats or Independents in all future elections.

ok I went and read the pdf file....... all I can say, is holy fuckin shit......

abortion made illegal and you can face criminal and civil litigation
repeal the minimum wage
remove redlight cams
bring back religion / religious teachings into school
continue the war in iraq.....
rise the age of consent to 18....
only us citizens can hold a drivers license....

I was not sure about the policy with no criminal action against lgbt people.... but based around what i am reading..... you would be exempt from hate speech and discrimination against lgbt.... and actively encouraged to hate lgbt.....

crosses texas off my places to visit....

.....that's why I'm a Democrat, babe. Bit like you being National vs Labour down there, there is a vast distance between the two parties and not always are the things they offer in the best interests of the people that vote for them.

And of course there's my favorite bit:

Bedsheets - We believe that bedsheets should be blue, either solid or in pinstripes. Bedsheets that are not blue anger the little cloud people who are the cause of stale lemonade and flat beer. Bedsheets of colors other than blue cannot be considered simply another color choice, left to the dictates of each individual's taste. Other colors tear at the integrity of our soft drinks of choice and undermine our nation's morale. We support legislation that imposes death by dragging to all members of any household found to clothe its beds in sheets of a color other than blue.

By comparison, I think they're actually going a bit easy on LGBT people these days, wouldn't you say? Must be getting morally lax. :tong:

Ah, but the color blue is an Abomination Unto Nuggan. The truly faithful must not ever gaze upon the Color Which Must Not Be Seen. (This does tend to raise some questions, i.e why did Nuggan make the sky blue then? but such things are Divine Mysteries[tm] and it's best not to think too hard about them.)

Gods don't like people not doing much work. People who aren't busy all the time might start to think. - TP, Small Gods

On the one hand, you're quite right, of course. On the other hand, no Texan worth his salt recognizes Nuggan (s'ok...he doesn't recognize them either, so it works out).

But on yet another hand entirely...how the hell did you know that I've been on the cusp of reading "Small Gods" for the past two weeks??? I've had it next to my bed, and just haven't had a chance to pick it up, and...hey, wait...were you next to my bed?????

Scary, isn't it?

Actually, "Small Gods" is about Om, the god of Omnia, who is pretty much like the god the Texas GOP worships. I think Nuggan is from "Monstrous Regiment," but I'll have to check. Marie's quote did come from SG, though, and it's kind of apt, except of course that it's not really the gods that want people to keep their heads down and keep working, it's the people who run the organized religions.

My favorite god-related Pratchett quote comes from "Reaper Man":

"Wizards don't believe in gods in the same way that most people don't find it necessary to believe in, say, tables. They know they're there, they know they're there for a purpose, they'd probably agree that they have a place in a well-organized universe, but they wouldn't see the point of believing, of going around saying 'O great table, without whom we are as naught.' Anyway, either the gods are there whether you believe or not, or exist only as a function of the belief, so either way you might as well ignore the whole business and, as it were, eat off your knees."

If only some of the more vocal "evangelists" could see that there's no point in "believing" in something you know is real, maybe they'd stop constantly trying to believe at people in a malicious manner. I know the sun will rise tomorrow, so if someone were to say it won't, I'd just smile and shake my head at their folly. What I wouldn't do is launch a crusude to spread the "good news" of the Rising Sun (pun intended) to all and sundry, whether they wanted to hear about it or no. And I certainly wouldn't try to legislate that everyone must observe the rising of the sun or face horrible penalties. Besides, I'm not a morning person, so I'd be the first one on the hot coals...

I have a real problem reconciling everything I hear about what Texas republicans believe in, and the Texans I know (all republicans). As individuals the ones I know are as nice as anybody you could hope to meet. Yet they support this crap. It's a strange world.

Some aren't even aware of their party's platform, it's a phenomena that happens across all political lines.

That's why I don't officially affiliate myself with any party.
