View Full Version : What new features would you most like to see on Bisexual.com?

Brian
Mar 6, 2005, 1:19 PM
I'm looking for input... The site is brand new and we have some "tweaking" to do and improvements to existing features to be made, but I am also looking ahead several months. So the question is, what major new features do you think should be highest priority to be added to the site? Comments and/or your vote, are most welcome!

(You can vote for more than one selection on this poll)

Most definitely @bisexual.com email addresses! You've already got the domain, we might as well get to use it! I'll serve them if y'all ask!!

I'm very keen on the idea of something.bisexual.com web hosting (possibly just as a redirect or with limited number of accounts available, it depends how much bandwidth you have to spare!) - it'd be really useful for a lot of local and national bi groups to have the snappy domain without needing to think up a new URL every time. And would casually drive a lot of traffic from around the globe to bisexual.com of course ;)

Oh, and another thing... the events calendar is fab but if we could have a filter thing on it by area?

That way I could look up what's going on in the UK, or USA people could look up what is going on in their state. That might make the listings a bit thin though so possibly just Canada/US/Europe/Other filters until there are more listings in the database.

Sorry if I am deviating a bit from the original aim of the thread, which was probably looking more for bolt-on projects than nuances of how the site works.

Well, honestly it's not a LOT, but would be very doable if y'all want to outsource your email hosting. I've already got a web/email server setup for my personal use, and a hosting a bunch more accounts wouldn't be a big deal. Let me know if you're interested - we could make it my donation to the site!

I've already got a web/email server setup for my personal use, and a hosting a bunch more accounts wouldn't be a big deal. Let me know if you're interested - we could make it my donation to the site! Thanks for the offer 20_twink. But I've got a honking server here, and I have my eye on some software that will interact with our current membership system, so I think the lead option is to keep it all on this server here. But I'll definitely keep all my options open, and appreciate the offer.

We are adding a bookstore to the site which I hope to have ready in a few days, and then we have some little bugs (bugs? gasp!) to be fixed with the main system here, and some small enhancements too, and then after that I'll move onto new features such as email services for all our members.

I'm surpised it (email services) is the number 1 request for new features - but that's why we have a poll like that! - to find out what you folks want. It will be cool to offer you all the use of an email address like me@bisexual.com

ps. Softfruit - the events modification you suggest is on the to-do list (the "small enhancements" I mentioned above).

Hey Drew... great site!!!!

I have a few chat suggestions that I think will help the site in the long run:

1) Make the chat applet open up in a seperate window so that we can utilize all the functions of the web site while still logged into chat. It would be great to be able to see who is online... check out profiles and read or send private messages while chatting.

2) If a username is a registered one make it so that someone entering thru on any of the other sites cannot use that username. I think this will prevent alit of hassles down the road.

That's it thou....... great site! NG

I hope you can work on the ability to access other parts of the site and not have to sign out of chat to do so. That is a big irritation. If a new person PM's me, I may want to look at their bio before I decide to really chat with them.

If a new person PM's me, I may want to look at their bio before I decide to really chat with them. Hi Laura. Good suggestion. We are going to change it so that the chat page automatically opens in a new Window, so you can use the original window to surf other parts of the site. But in the meantime, there is a way you can force this to happen...

Instead of just clicking on the Chat button, right-click on it and select "Open Link in New Window". This will give you two open windows to Bisexual.com, one for chatting and another, the original one, to check out the other parts of the site. It's a handy little surfing trick.

I hope that helps. :)

How do I get a cartoon like drew's ? :kay: Hi NextPleasure!

Actually it's quite a coincidence that you would ask that! Our resident artist (and the fellow who designed the color-scheme and graphics for this site), Dusty, did my custom avatar for me. And every month beginning in April I am going to have a contest/raffle where the prize will be a free custom avatar done to your specs by Dusty! I thought it would be a neat little thing to do. :bounce:

So stay tuned for the details. I'll work them out and announce something before the end of this month.

Welcome and enjoy the site!

Drew,
If you decide to list local clubs on the site, I'd be willing to provide you with a list of the places in my area. I'll even tell you what I think of places we've checked out. This would cover the Kansas City area. I do have a favorite club that is a place for basically everyone --- gay, str8, bi, swingers, etc. Good music and some really fascinating people. . .

You know what I want Drew? A confidential way to tell when someone you meet is bisexual. I know, I know, not something you can do with the website, but wouldn't it be damn cool if you could walk into a room, and know who there is bi, without anyone else that isn't bi knowing that? Of course, it assumes all bi folks are together, and won't out each other, and stab each other in the back. But c'mon, let me have my fantasy for a bit, okay? There's aseries of sci-fo books by Lois Bujold, where on a sexually liberated planet, everybody wears coded earrings, that describe an individual's sexual orientation and status, and whether they're looking, and what they're looking for. Boy, that would be cool.

i think the search profile thing could be improved, there should be some kind of key word and/or interests search along with what there already is.

A couple of bugs with the existing profiles:

The search for 'transgendered' does not work; if it returns anything at all, it's a list of M/M couples which already exists elsewhere.
The Kinsey scale numbers are all off by one. They should run from 0 to 6, not 1 to 7.

And yes, there is a need to be able to narrow down a little more finely the search results. For instance, add 'what they are looking for' as one of the search criteria - no point showing me endless "couple seeks bi-female" listings as there's nothing here they'd want, as one example.

A search on something like 'within ten years in age, within 200km, not in a foreign country, not smoking, not on drugs, not married posting as single, not in this looking to have kids or looking for someone to support kids they had with an ex-' and then exclude the ones where the ad clearly indicates that I'm not what they're looking for would be useful. So basically a list of keywords, each of which could be marked yes/no/don't care

I would like to see settings for the chat in our profiles like font colors and background colors so we don't hafta get into chat and spend 5 minutes adjusting these things. The white from the chat background hurts me eyes after a bit.

I would also like to see maybe a separate section of the forums for more emotionally charged issues like in the chatrooms.

And maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a forewarning for the nude pix. It might help some of the more squemish of the group.

Also, maybe a way to post pix on the site with permissions? That way I could share pix with people that I know and wouldn't need to be concerned about Joe bloe at work registering as a prank. :)

Other than these things the site is GREAT!

I'm with CarlB -- I'd like to see some improvements in the "search" capabilities of the site.
For one thing: some geographical reality. I'm in SE Pennsylvania and am classified as "Pennsylvania," so all the updates and newbies that I'm shown when I log on are in Pennsylvania. Many of them are one hundred or more miles from where I live.
But although I'm only ten miles from the New Jersey border, I don't see NJ updates and newbies.
I've not been able to figure out why so many personals sites abandoned the "base zipcode and radius by miles or KM" searchmethod that was so widespread a few years ago.
As an alternative: give us a chance to specify the states, provinces or regions that we want to be listed in or to call "home." I live in PA but travel regularly to ME, NH, CT, DE, NJ, NY and MD. I'd like to be able to meet new people in those areas without having to make special searches for each state.
And it would be nice to be able to specify minimum/maximum ages for searches. I'm happy for the 20- and 30-somethings who are discovering their bisexuality, but I'm not interested in meeting them. I'm looking for people between 55 and 70.
Otherwise: a really nice site -- relatively user-friendly, neatly designed, easily-navigable. Bisexual.com is head-and-shoulders above the crowd of "contact" sites.

Hmmm...

First let me thank you again for such a great site!

The ability to search not based on a state but instead based on a radial distance from a specific area code or town would ROCK.

I live in the extreme NW corner of MS about 3 mins from Memphis TN, which is also in the extreme corner of a state.

Two severe problems with the way the message board is currently configured:

There's no way to edit a post more than an hour old
There's no way to delete a userid once created

This is a serious matter as, given the nature of the topics discussed here, often a post will cross the line into TMI, too much information, or will come a little too close to containing personal-identifiable information that could cause serious problems IRL.

The issue of not being able to edit old posts is not disclosed anywhere, including the site privacy policy. The first I heard of it was when I tried to edit something and had this thrown in my face:

System Message

The administrator has specified that you can only edit messages for 60 minutes after you have posted. This limit has expired, so you must contact the administrator to make alterations on your message.

Unless and until these problems are resolved, I think that it would be for the best that I stop posting here.

Drew, first of all, this is a wonderful site as it is! Thanks for all of your work.

I don't know if this is possible but if there could be more per state info or other ways for people - Indiana this case - to meet one another? I'm also a member at one of the out sites and it's nice because although it is a national site each state has it's own little "sub sites."

Just a thought but again, the way this is now if great!

Drew:

It's not just a great site, it's a great commnity. I come and go in terms of postings and chatting, but it seesm that there are always folks here who are welcoming, interested in debating and sharing adn I believe that since you moderate things, the credit goes to you Drew. We all participate but you set it up, maintain it, give us plenty of opportunity to explore things but yet you set appropriate boundries for the adults on the site.

Thank you Drew!!!

As for what I would like to see - perhaps a way to identify people who are on the site who are underage. I think underage folks have a right to be here to learn - it is especially important for education, however, I DO NOT want to find myself in an erotic chat with a minor. This has happened only once and as soon as I realized the young lady was too young, I said good bye quickly.

In this day and age, with underage people so computer literate - more so than I, barriers need to be established to protect their innocence whioe allowing them opportunities to learn age appropriate concepts.

I don't have any specific suggestion and I know this would be difficult to do.

Not sure if some one mentioned this above. I dont have time right now to read through them all.

I think adding a new section to the forums for the more "erotic" discussions. Rather than having one main forum, maybe have one for support, one for erotic discussions and one for anything else (you could maybe also add one specifically for people looking for hook ups).

Just an idea.

PS. Site is awsome

softfruit
Feb 12, 2007, 4:41 AM
That's a really interesting idea LoveLion - one of the common refrains in the Forums area seems to be "do people have to keep going on about sex all the time!?" Which I don't think is because people think bis shouldn't talk about sex, just that when you come to the forums if you're looking for information and support then lurid discussions of fantasies can be offputting. Especially so for non-bi partners and family/friends who want advice on how to be supportive.

Splitting the fora into "Forums" and "Adult Forums" might give users the clue that the lists of sexual fantasies belong in the latter and simply finding bi pals in the former. I like that idea. It could take a lot of policing though.

Gosh Drew you've done so much already, I hate to ask that you do more.

But since you asked, in a strickly woolgathering sort of sense.....

I too, don't really care for the java chat. Being old school in chat rooms I don't like that I can't look back at a conversation after having been in the room for a length of time longer than the java chat will let me look backwards. I also don't like how I can't check a profile without going out of the chatroom and risking loosing the connection. I'm used to doing main room and multiple instant messages when I do my chatting.

I would like to see each member's area have more information, I'd like a sort of locking system for the photos so I can post a public profile but post pictures that are non downloadable in a -by invitation only method of viewing.

I would like to see connections to local coffee shops between your company and local co-operating resturants to serve as solid meeting grounds for local members connected to your site. Although Austin is my home, I've been away for eight years. Now it feels like I'm a stranger in a strange land anymore. I wish I knew where to go to meet other people from THIS site, locally.

Also, I know it's a small thing, but I'm not from Texas, other areas. I'm from the CAPITOL of Tx. Austin. I'd like to have our city in the list of options.

Also I have been curious as to the possibility of like: a sort of co-op. Sex toys and lubricants are very expensive. I'd like to see special deals through members only group buying power. (and yes, I'd pay a subscription to have this service)

Speaking of that.........If you need money to help with building the site, even the poorest of us can likely afford $5 a month. If you need it. Ask for it.

Thanks again Drew for your extreme generousity with your time and talent.

My only wish is that I wouldn't have to re-log in so many times while visiting.
Many times I have to log in everytime I change from home to forum to chat to home again. Sometimes, I just logged in and go to forum and have to log in again within less than a minute. Maybe it is my security settings doing that. Any suggestions?

Hey Drew,
Well my 2 cents here as well! Id like to see something changed in thumbnails for profiles and photos on profiles.

I know many people like to come see the nude pics, I dont have a problem with that. But if the icons could be made where they couldnt be nude thumbnails, that would be nice, and possibly a red "X" on the corner of the thumbnail to warn users that their profile may have nudity in it.

It would just make it a bit nicer for some like me, who might click on a profile based on the location only to see something you werent expecting lol

So thumbnails with no nudity allowed and if they have nudity when you open their profile, put a red X in the corner of the thumbnail, it would let people know wether or not they want to open that profile. :)

Maybe having it where someone has to have something in their profile before they can create or post any threads. Im not saying take their ability to use the site or read the threads, but it would be nice to be able to see a profile of the person who responds to them, and might sort out some people who are merely lurkers lol Ok Im going to bed, have a great day everyone :)

I posted this in another thread as well, but am posting it here hoping Drew will see it. :)

I may be the world's worst at finding things on a site. Coming here was the first forum I have ever posted to and I don't really do chat.

What I think would be neat would kinda be an addition to the site greeter idea-which I think is great.

I keep reading about the "straight wives club" and how they support each other. Who are these women? Is there a way to chat with them?

It would be kinda cool if you had certain groups on here, like:

Straight wives club
Coming out club

And whatever else people need. Like if you think you may be bi, but don't know and want support/advice/help.

Each of these could have a greeter(s) and members.

I realize all topics are talked of in the forum, but sometimes it can be hard to say what you think. I know I received a ton of support when I came here as a straight wife-but I know I felt very exposed and somewhat conflicted about being honest about my feelings at first. It was a learning/working experience for me. I am at a much different place now, but when I first found out I was hurt, angry, confused, and very shocked. I tried most times to temper what I said so I would not offend the bisexuals here who welcomed me, but it would have been nice to have a forum that was separate where "true" feelings could have been shared. (hence my interest in the straight wives club-and greeters from there. Women who could share how they "came through to the other side" and are happy where they are now, but who could empathize with and understand the more negative emotions that are felt by some at first.

I also think that for people who are struggling with accepting that they are bi and dealing with the early issues surrounding that (with the accompanying pain and confusion, possibly the lying and hiding that sometimes occurs in the early faze-it may be nice to have a group to talk to-and volunteer greeters of a sort that would understand and could share their stories.

I do think that people that are in this phase are in a different place than the "I know I am bi and love it" people.

I am thinking as I write and if you are still reading, I guess what I think would be cool would be some groups that would target where people are or who they are, with greeters who have been there too, and possibly mini life stories about it that you could read and use for personal growth.

I can't think of what other groups would be good (maybe a group for poly people where newly interested people could come or a group for monogamous people to share how that works in their life)

Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi Drew,

First of all, you're doing a fantastic job, and all at a very affordable price! :P

What about the ability to see who has viewed my profile? If a viewer wishes to remain anonymous, give them that option when opening a profile.

I love all the ideas so far, but the one thing I can think of, not necessarily for me but for many on here that come not for the sexual activity, but for friends and friendly chat, would be to have a highlighted or somehow indicated profile that has nudity on it. Every so often we get a post about that from so-called 'unaware' folks that they look at a profile and lo and behold are surprised that they see flesh.

Thanks again,
luv and kisses

Drew - I love the site. Lots of good info here. I'd like to see a Bi-man wives 'club'. I'm married to a bi man and its hard to find other women like me - not interested in a 3 some - just interested in support.

Thanks.

That wouldn't be too hard at all Ratchick. I'll see what I can do. :D

And, Welcome to the site!!!
Would that just be for the US or would the UK and the rest of Europe be included?

One small addendum to my earlier post on this subject: might there be a way for each of us to be able to see which visitors to the site have reviewed our personal profiles over, say, the last ten days or two weeks ? Perhaps a "viewed by" drop-down ?

Thanks for listening.

Hello again,

I just had an idea that would be really neat, but I have no idea how much work would go into creating it.
In reference to the thread running about how people's orientation swings back and forth, I think it would be really kind of cool (and helpful to understand where everyone is at......at any given time) If there were included under someone's Icon/pic a small color dot meter showing which way a person was CURRENTLY leaning in the ebb and flow of sexual desire. You could include the setup at login and allow it to be set permanetly or adjustable.

Another thing which I am not certain about how you or anyone else might feel about, but it would be nice to be able to review your posts and have the ability to edit or delete them entirely long after they were posted. (enlightenment is a slow process)

Thanks again Drew,

FF

personally... a library of member submitted bisexual erotica would be cool.... personally written stories and stories collected of the net... and then we could rate them as we read them....

it would be interesting to see where members tastes lie by their ratings and comments on the stories.

What about a place where you can post your fantasies and others can vote Hot or Not? or, for a more nuanced approach:

__ Wow! I want to HAVE YOUR BABY! (even if I'm a guy)

__ Not bad, not bad at all!

__ Um, OK. Anyone got the sports section?

__ Rather watch paint dry.

__ Get professional help! NOW!

This of course would also help compatible people to connect. And it would have to be understood by all that what's being voted on is not the person, just the particular fantasy.

Filters for our private inbox. Would be nice to sort messages to folders. Also more control of downloading messages. As it is you download all or nothing. Be nice to download all, or one message from Joe Blow.

It would be nice if you could type a message an it show up. I do not know why, but I can not type a message and have all of the letters that I type show up. 15 of the words here I ad to try at least 2 times. Make that 20 words, now.

Can you organise the forum threads so that the porn content is a little less obvious? It would make the site more accessible to all bisexuals this way. Would also encourage new members. What do u think Drew?

Would like to be able to PM (Private Message) or at least "ping" someone when you are on line. I often see friends online, send an e-mail and they log off before getting it. Unless they are in chat, how can you poke them ? If it's not a feature, it should be. If it is, please explain how to do it ?

How about a multi-person video chat? A person could set up a room and multiple people could chat together. Then maybe we could have a virtual camp-out, a la 'Cat's text camp-out in the forum last month.

I concur with all of the suggestions stated above. I am getting progressively frustrated with how long it takes me to type a message as the delay in keystroke to sight is annoying.

On a dating site which I belong to, there is the option of seeing who has viewed your profile and I like that. I have met some really nice folks whom I may not have noticed had I not seen they were looking at my profile (mostly distance related)

Keep up the great work Drew. I miss the old friends from the sit but as with anything, we must keep adding new blood if we are to survive.

Would like to see the site have the handy transporter device via Star
Trek. This would greatly improve the site's value to me, may even be
persuasive in joining the fan club if access to said transporter was
a membership benefit. ;)

Also may consider that capitulating pants being offered to members
as persuasive. By this I mean pants that capitulate with the wearer
irregardless of gender, they just universal fit and f**k. These would
be so great a benefit, I would stay logged in eternally, sitting
in a soppy wet pool in my capitulating pants. ;) This idea comes to
me from a sister-in-law whom one day said, "these f**king pants are
cutting me in half!"

I watched and waited all day for her to take off her lovely f**king
pants. She asked me why I suddenly began to freakishly watch her
butt. Had to explain I was not alone in the watching, both my brothers
were also watching. And explained I wanted her f**king pants, liked the
idea of pants that f**k the wearer. She got a good chuckle out of it.

Same here. Nice guys are all over the world, but my interest is with those in driving distance. Along these lines, having a person's location adjacent to his name in chat would be helpful (ala S.D.) Or maybe combine the features. Have the distance from you to each other person show adjacent to their names!

I want a Snog Fran button what actually reaches through the ethers and gives her a snogging. Also a Snog Smurfy button what does the same would be loved as well. This may be a case of creating a general Snog $USER type button, where it snogs the desired user. I may also consider we need a Blowjob/Munch $USER button as well. This would greatly aid in cases of mass insanity from blue balls and green cherries. ;)

Drew,
How about an option to "like" a persons post without having to send a note or anything. This site http://www.swingersboard.com/forums/forum.php uses the same template you use. Check out the forum and you will see the "like" tag.
Thanks!

I agree with Hypersexual about having a like button for posts. Red Clouds Bulletin Board uses this same template and each post has a Thanks (like) button. More often than not I don't comment on these forums because its the better part of valor to keep my mouth shut even when I agree with what someone says. It would be nice to have some way to just simply acknowledge a post without having to reiterate what someone else has said. It could be argued that having this would allow people to laze out and not comment but I don't think there's any real danger of that happening around here.

I like tristancirs idea. Chat via a tablet is difficult. I can get into the chat room but the functions aren't available.

And I like the idea of a like option to respond to a thread.

Thanks for opening this up and asking for ideas, Drew.

I'm looking for input... The site is brand new and we have some "tweaking" to do and improvements to existing features to be made, but I am also looking ahead several months. So the question is, what major new features do you think should be highest priority to be added to the site? Comments and/or your vote, are most welcome!
