I just looked at the website and I was shocked by the sheer number of people who are being remembered. You would think that in 2009, in the modern day, no-one would be murdered just because they are transgender. Why on earth do people do this to other people? Can't they just live and let live.
I found it very chilling that some of the people who were murdered were even younger than I am or the same age as me (21) and that one of the people on the list died in a city I visit a lot during my holidays (Brighton).
I suppose, being a mostly closeted crossdresser/androgyne who lives in quite a tolerant area, I am at not at much risk, especially if I stay in the closet. But even that is not an ideal way to live (I'm coming out gradually, dropping hints etc...). I admire the courage that many trans people show just by being themselves rather than what society says they are "supposed" to be. It is terrible that people are dying just for being themseleves, surely that is a basic right of any civilised society (the freedom to be yourself).
I've just re-read the comics and noticed the fact that TG people have a 1 in 12 chance of being murdered. That is pretty scary, especially when compared to the odds of a non-TG person being murdered.
