Seriously - the writer missed the one(s) where the woman's labia were sewn shut bar a small opening from which to pee and menstruate through. On the wedding night, the husband would slce through retainers and / or flesh in order to render the woman avaliable for her duties.

Of course one has to wince even more when one realises that female circumcision (actually a clitorectomy) was (is?) also practiced.

Actually female circumcision is entirely different from what you're thinking it is. Female circumcision is generally removing the clitoral hood(and sometimes the labia), while what you're referring to is called female genital mutilation.
Sorry to go off topic, but it bugs me when people mix up the two.

The latterly professed intention might be to remove the clitoral hood - if it actually exists in any appreciable size to be separately removable - but the practice tends to be that of an exterior clitorectomy. The picture shown is that of the inner labia being removed in a modern day surgical procedure typically to beautify the fannies of the rich. Why? The veils of venus were once revered.

In the accounts that I have seen, the stated intention is that woman should then only be able to enjoy penetrative sex (because it is only the external appearance of the clitoris which is removed and the larger internal component remains - this contributes to the G-spot).

There is no confusion - there has been and still exists the butchery of women; illogically a tradition visitied upon the young by their own relatives. Here's hoping that modern communications weans these people away from this.
