The following link was removed from the station's website after HSUS threatened them with a lawsuit.

I'm not surprised really. Disappointed. That's why I contribute ONLY to the local SPCA.

speaking of which....
recently at my corner convenience store, I noticed a glass jar sitting on the counter by the checkout. Our CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) usually asks retailers if they can collect funds through these collection jars, and most retailers are happy to help out. The funds collected from these jars go into "CNIB Guide Dog Training". That's the text on the jars, with a legit logo of "the" guide dog we all know and love.
The glass I saw at my local store read: "help support dogs who lead the blind, please donate". This jar was NOT put there by the CNIB.
I told the retailer that he should ask for credentials when the person came to collect the money out of that jar. He just shrugged...and I'll bet he won't even bother... after all, WE are the ones being misled, not him. He's a grouch so I didn't pursue it, but I DID call the CNIB and tell them about this fraud. They knew all about it.
What a shameful society we live in. And every time we DON'T do something about frauds we are enabling it to continue.

My wife and I stopped giving to USHS about three years ago after I researched and discovered how little money was going to the animals! Lots of big salaries are being paid to their executives, though.
I'd encourage anyone giving to a charity of any type to do the background check. What percentage of funds go to the work and how much pays salaries and office overhead? I once worked with one of our area charities and was shocked to discover that there are actually "charity executives" who make a great living by starting "charities," getting government and public funding, and then living "high on the hog" while very little help is being provided to those they supposedly serve. Most states have a database in the charities division of the state's Secretary of State office.
I can't blame the TV station for removing the story. Lawsuits are expensive. It would be nice, though, if the type of investigative reporting this story demonstrated were being done at all levels of US government. So much of the press has become a mouth piece for the current DC administration.

About the Nature Conservancy and the Sierra Club: I have heard reports that back you up about the NC. They sell land for "compounds" and sold some very ecologically sensitive costal sandplain in Martha's Vineyard to Dave Letterman's development company (after the original owners refused to sell it to Letterman's company and other developers) which makes the NC somewhat a front. They do some good work in places, I am sure, such as a prairie preservation plot in NE Oklahoma, but the number of developments they allow, and the extreme low density of those developments, are a problem. If it's a suburb, even a park-like one, it is not conserving nature in the way most people think of it. And extreme low density development is part of our problem re: oil dependency.
But I know little about the faults of the Sierra Club. If you can stand the strain and spend the time, please enlighten me or at least light the candle.
Thanks!
