Firefox rox! Its way cooler, and safer than Internet Explorer anyday!

What all would you like to know? Its a kick ass browser which is good to have when IE acts up... its very secure!

well one question that comes to mind, is that I do alot of secure transactions and sometimes if you don't have the right SSL you can't use the site, So does it pretty work the same, meaning most sites accept firefox?

Firefox handles SSL ( Secure Socket Layers ) fairly much the same as Internet Explorer. It can use encrypted SSL, meaning your data transfer is secure, just like Explorer.

There is more info on SSL in Firefox's knowledge base. Here is just one quick link I found. It advises on how to ensure the SSL works for the majority of SSL using sites.

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+cannot+connect+securely+because+the+SSL+pr otocol+is+disabled

So, yes Firefox is secure and can use SSL to protect any data you need transfer to / from a site.

If you're really concerned over security, a suggestion might involve switching to Linux. Linux doesn't get viruses. The reason is because it's Open Source, meaning anyone can look at the code used to make a program. And the developers put the original source out into the public forum early on. That means lots of folks see how things are done and are supposed to be. Which sort of limits the desire to code viruses. The software is free to everyone, what's the point?

That isn't to say Linux cannot get a virus. It happens, but rarely. And usually those rare cases are handled immediately, with free patches or hacks to destroy or nullify the virus. And again that info is pushed out hard and fast into the mainstream public forum. "Wow, virus over here!" "Um, gotcha covered, wrote a program last week to address this issue. Here ya go." "Thanks." "No prob, just pass it on."

So far about the only issue I have with Linux is figuring out how to get Java to work properly. And that is a matter of me simply not taking the time to read the right docs as of yet. I've been too busy getting lost in Emacs and Lisp, learning C, learning bits at a time about system admin. And wow, all this education so far has been free off the internet! :)

But, you don't need to switch to Linux based solely on my suggestion. In fact I would prefer you didn't. Go explore over at www.linux.org if you'd like. Make an informed call for yourself. You might not be for Linux, or it for you. There's nothing wrong with that either.

Well, I better scoot. Need to reconfigure my Big Red Button. Run it slow.

I've been using Firefox for about two months now and it seems to work faster than IE and I've had fewer freezes, too. It is very easy to adjust settings to ensure history is automatically deleted when closing browser ensuring privacy.

Void ty so much for all the information and taking the time to provide me the the link, I think you just gave my sunday morning brain an educational orgasm :tong:

Very Much appreciated.

Thank you all for your responses, I'm going to check out all the info and then get off my ass and do something, cause I am really tired of IE8 and I have only had it a couple weeks.

Google Chrome is also an option. It's relatively secure too and doesn't bitch as much when I browse porn. . .:D

We only use IE when we must, since there are some sites that will not work on Mozilla, like the MS Windows updater site.

Firefox is the absolute tits.

Been using it for years and love it. They update it every few months and it has a significantly lower incidence of holes, for viruses to get through, than IE.

Combine FF with Norton, Adaware and spybot S&D and you have a great deal of internet security. Far more than using IE, even with those other programs.

I dl'd the firefox, holy shit hey it spells checks for me. Wow.

Anywho. I have windows defender and AVG. think that is good enough? my puter not all that fancy where I can have a bunch of background stuff running. I am planning to get a new one hopefully by christmas time.

But I really like the way firefox loads up and damn it spellchecks for me too. Well doesn't mean I have to pay attention to it though..lol:cool:

I agree with what everyone has been saying..

I started using Firefox from day 1 but because it was so new many websites were not set up for Firefox. Years later those sites get fewer and fewer BUT there are still some that I cannot use Firefox.

A few months ago I ran into a site that I use on occasion but this time it was not working when using Firefox. Weeks later it was still having issues (even though I emailed them dozens of times and they say they are working perfectly) and that is the only time I use IE.

My suggestion is do NOT get rid of IE because you never know which sites have Firefox issues.

I am going to be unpopular here but the problem with IE8 is the person using it. You have had it two weeks and you hate it? You can't learn it in two weeks. Just like people who hate Vista and a few years ago people who hated XP.
I have hated every version of IE for different reasons but I use it. I have also used every version of Firefox and still use both browsers and have both installed on every computer in the house (five computers plus my test box). Each of them has it's strong points and it's weak points. The IE8 version that came with Windows 7 Ultimate Edition was the pits. Firefox has had their share of the same. I beta tested IE8 for months and months and still don't have full control over it all. I average 12 to 16 hours a day on the computer four days a week. For someone to say I have had it for two weeks and hate it.........makes me laugh out loud. Learn IE8 and you won't hate it. I still use Firefox for secure transactions but prefer IE8 for most other normal everyday surfing.
Probably most on here don't remember an online experience before the Internet went public. When a 300 baud modem was fast you didn't have all these concerns. Live and learn.....LEARN IS THE KEY WORD. If you hate the guy who punches you in the nose, learn to box.:2cents:

*Sigh* And there couldn't have been a better way to explain it?
I did learn it. IE8 is slow. IE8 has error pages on almost every website I visit. IE8 prevents me from being able to check my email with my internet provider, even though it can be done through other programs. IE8 freezes my computer. So if I say I hate IE8. Yes it is me. I can hate what is not effective to my needs. It doesn't take me that long to learn stuff like that. I was doing programs when everything was still DOS and NEC had come out with its first portable computer 20 years ago. I also have visited many forums including the beta test forum for it and still everyone has similar problems. So I base my final opinion on experience and research.

AVG is a good anti virus client for sure. Remember to let it update its databases frequently. They use active core virus definitions, which is similar in effect to what you find under Linux. "New virus?" "Zapped it yesterday after reading the code." "Oh." :)

I never used Norton's much as it usually would hang up our computers. Of course, that might have been a looking at it cross eyed thing. But when you overclock chips and expect the software to keep up ... *ahem* <whistles all innocent like> um, guess it doesn't.

Might want to look into a software firewall too. Zone Alarm used to be one I'd suggest. Not sure what I'd put on a system now. Really not done much here on Mom's Vista system. She's got Defender though, and I do keep abreast of where she goes online. Usually pretty 'safe' sites. Wife tends to guide her about things, which is nice.

Probably say Zone Alarm at any given, though Defender may be enough in itself. Something you also may consider:
Ask your Internet Service Provider if they scan their incoming email with an anti virus program. Most of them do, and you can probably find out what type they use in their FAQ or About pages. Best there is having them scan with ClamAv. And if they use Spam Assassin to filter spam so much the better too.

Coding in Dos? He he. You'd like using a terminal in Linux then. It uses scripting like batch files. Although it takes Dos way beyond a new level. And I admit it, have become spoiled with a graphical user interface. But is good to at least know the basics in a terminal.

Also good to know "You don't need to hook the phone line into the computer with a serial modem." :) (chuckling) Never used a serial modem, didn't occur to me. Boyfriend visits and he grins and laughs.

Still, good to know someone is looking out for me. :)

Well, I better scoot. Had to help clean up and get stuff put back in order yesterday. Sneaky wifey, "surprise you get to help me turn it all upside down then put it back!" (grumble, gr, grumble) She might have me paint the house or something today, I mean hey I've got the yard mowed up real good. I want to sit and play with my world domination plan, but nooooo ...

FireFox is fairly good but you can remove IE8, assuming you upgraded to it, by going to your control panel, add/remove programs and simply removing Internet Explorer 8.

Firefox has a lot of addon's if you want streamlined web surfing, don't add them. Have fun :)

I have been using both Firefox and IE8 for some time. Firefox' best quality is hat it is relatively safe from popups, spam and other Internet annoyances. On the down side, some web sites will not work with Firefox (such as my office remote access). So I have both installed, and use them as may be needed for particular programs.

I use FF and have for some years since my techie brother told me I needed to. I have WAY less problems, its more secure than IE is and its fun. You can get things to personalize your browser :) Right now mine is a blue dark forest with firefly's all over :)

Put your claws back in for crying out loud... if it takes anyone longer than a day or two to learn IE8 they probably shouldnt be running a computer at all, its a browser.... it SUCKS... I HATE it and I used it for many years. Firefox is a MUCH better browser. Hands down, no if's ands or but's it far better than IE ever was. It took a team of adults to mess up IE and 1 kid to created FF lol

Lets be nice, its a browser we are talking about, not some huge life altering issue. No need to pop them claws out at people until they do something to attack you first!

Interesting that you have used IE8 for years when it was just released. Bi the way, when my claws come out you will know it. I was well aware that those who are computer illiterate would be upset at my posting. Welcome to that group.

If you take the time to learn the IE8 settings those issues can be eliminated. Obviously you used the default installation. If you would rather not learn then using Firefox is probably a good idea. DOS was much easier and I taught advanced DOS for a number of years. Technology moved on and we either move with it or we get lost in that new technology.
