The DC city council voted 13-1 to officially recognize same sex marriages from other states or nations yesterday and this is seen as a stepping stone to performing marriages in the city. This is interesting because it puts the issue in front of Congress which gets a chance to review DC legislation, so hopefully because of the current political makeup there won't be any congressional interference. Also interesting though is that the major resistance to same-sex marriage in DC is coming from local black community churches which are overwhelmingly Democratic party supporters, so there may be some internecine infighting going on over the issue.

One thing at a time. If you start talking triads or more that will send people to try and shut any of the doors that were recently opened. Besides if you have 3 or more how doyou work out property ,child, spousal rights in case of divorce

Yep Fran, being complicated is not a good excuse for making something illegal. All that really would be required is really solid contract law applied to marriages. There is already enough precedent for stuff like this in the commercial world (multi-partner businesses) to make it workable. Most of the ethical arguments against polyamorous marriages (e.g. abuse of women in polygamous situations) fall apart if there is a strong legal framework to support them. The only thing that might be distasteful is that people would have to do a lot more upfront legal planning for marriages, but maybe that is not such a bad idea... kinda takes the romance out of a bit though

If marraige was a written contract, all property and child rights can be stipulated. Adding another person should be a simple matter of ammending the original contract.
