I'm looking into buying my first dildo and I keep running into the problem that it will be delivered either to my school or my parents house. Either way I want it to be very hard for people to figure out what it is. From what I've been told these sites are usually very good at being discreet, but with the kind of people who process the packages here at school I don't want the sending address to have a name on it that even vaguely indicates where it comes from. As well as having discreet shipping I'm also looking for a site with good prices, a good selection, an easy to use site, and that will process orders fairly quickly. Aren't there any adult stores around your area that you could go to one evening? That would be the most discreet, one would think. Or one in a neighboring town would be even more discreet.

Either option would prevent the possibility of having the merchandise accidentally sent somewhere you don't want it to go.

As for internet places, most of them mail things to you in discreet packaging... have it shipped UPS that way you have to pick it up at the UPS store or at the UPS bldg itself... better yet, some places will ship to a PO BOX, that way you can go to the post office and pick it up yourself.

Funny this should come up tonight. I was just at this companies store in the Boston area today.

Every morning I walk out of my house and say, "Why the fuck did they have to put Kentucky there?" Once I get in my car it takes me less than two minutes to get to Kentucky, and unfortunately I have to go there fairly often because the closest mall is in Ashland.

Where I live there's a very high probability that some homophobic redneck will be in the store who would be very willing to beat me up on my way out. The way I look they would probably jump to the conclusion that I'm buying it for me instead of buying it for a friend or something.

What about the Cincinnati area? I drove through there a few times and read a little about it online. It seems pretty cool, and if I'm guessing right, that ought to be within reach. I can't imagine that city without a sex toy shop or two.

Texas and much of the South abound with sex toy shops. Rednecks, kickers, country folk--whatever you call them, they may go there (and quite a lot actually do), but they aren't necessarily going to assault a guy buying a dildo, even if you look "queer" to them. How would they know whether it's for your own use or not?

If you do go to a sex toy shop, and you're worried about someone attacking you, bring a friend, go in the daytime, and scan for creeps and potential threats BEFORE you begin to shop. Be polite, and remember that country folk are people, too. Another recommendation: anything near a truck stop is surprisingly safe to visit. Truckers and the businesses that depend on their money don't like trouble (a trucker may even step in to help if they see someone getting attacked), and the police usually look after those areas, especially in the outskirts and rural areas. Lots of truckers like porn, and many are homo or bi, or at least into toys, so you'll be in good company, even if they don't like non-hets.

Two books I'd like to recommend: Anal Pleasure & Health, by Dr. Jack Morin, and Guide To Getting It On, by Paul Joannides. The former is based on research by the author (note the title of Doctor), was groundbreaking on first publication, and still is one of the best works on the subject. The other is an informal and humorous, yet informative book that also leads to great further reading on lots of topics. You can get them from Borders, B&N, etc., or your usual discreet book source.

Not gonna argue with you that Waverly's not that good of a place. Ever hear of Daniel Fetty (http://www.lgbthatecrimes.org/doku.php/daniel-fetty)? I've heard stories of other non-hets, as frikidiki put it, getting beaten up and not reporting it. Don't know how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me.

How would they know whether it's for your own use or not?

Around here the way I look is enough proof for many that it's for personal use.

I actually got an ex-girlfriend who I'm still good friends with to go with me to the closest shop as a sort of safety net. But when we got there, the selection was horrible. I've seen a wider variety of toys in some peoples bedrooms.

Blowfish.com is good; packages come from "SBC" and are as discrete as you could want. Of course, I have also purchased directly from Amazon.com--they have everything!--and the box only says "Amazon" on it.

Note that sometimes you're buying through, but not from, Amazon. So be careful of that. If memory serves, one shipment did come direct from a store with a rather telling, but not explicit, name. However, if people were to recognize it, then they already shop for toys anyway . . . . Might strike up a friendship there. And in any case, there's no list of contents on the outside.

I used to be sort of embarrassed to go to the adult store too - then I had to spend an hour and a half in a bookstore with another perv friend of a friend who didn't want to leave - if you look at it long enough the stuff actually gets old. In fact the majority of people have sexual thoughts - I wouldn't worry too much about it. If anyone asks why you're buying just ask them what THEY are doing there..frankly it's none of their damn business - unless one wants to go home with you..
