Yeah, I'm a crossdresser and, be reassured, it is (from all evidence) a lot more common than you may think. You are not alone.

Crossdressing is quite a varied thing, with some men only dressing on rare occasions, some dressing for emotional reasons and some dressing for sexual reasons (with me, it started out as a sexual thing but now it is more of an emotional thing... not to say that it is never sexual... but that's another topic). You can spend years trying to work out why you are a crossdresser but everyone is different and, from what I gather, very few crossdressers understand why they are what they are. To be honest, it is a bit of a pointless question really because it doesn;t change anything and there is nothing wrong with being a crossdresser.

The only thing that I might advise is that you think about buying some clothes of your own. Not only because your wife will be doubly shocked if she finds out (eg: that you crossdress and that you also are wearing her clothes without her permission) but also because it saves you having to carefully replace them so that it looks like they haven't been moved. Also, if you have your own clothes then you can find a hiding place for them which suits you.

I'm not going to condemn you for it though because a lot of crossdressers (including myself) probably started out by wearing someone else's clothes. Buying your own (female) clothes might sound scary at first but it is a lot better because you can get the clothes that you want to wear rather than what your wife wants to wear.

As for the whole confidence thing in regards to buying clothes, I'd advise that you buy them from somewhere a reasonable distance from your home town (charity shops/thrift stores are great for this, they are cheap, have a greater variety of clothes and if you are nervous then you can pretend to look at the books/bric-a-brac etc... until the shop empties) and don't try to make up excuses when buying (nothing says "crossdresser" more than a guy buying a short dress, stockings etc... and muttering 'It's for my wife...honest.') but don't say that you are a crossdresser. Let the shopkeeper come to their own conclusions, they don't know you and will probably never see you again so what does it matter ?

Also, it just takes practice. I stopped borrowing clothes when I was about 16 and now, at 20, I have bought female clothes and found that the shopkeeper was more freaked out by it than I was.

There is also the issue of size, if you are not sure what your female clothing size is then always err on the side of caution and buy something larger. You will eventually work out your size (eg:I am about a UK 14/16).

Believe it or not, there was a time when women were jailed for wearing men's clothes. Go farther back than that and you will find that men or women that cross-dressed were put to death.

Admittedly a bit over the top, but it did happen and there were very severe laws against it for a few centuries.
