I once had the honor of attending a woman's funeral... she was not an important woman. She was just a house wife and she was nothing big in life but she touched so many peoples lives. She did so much that when it came around time to give her funeral 800 people showed up. I thought to myself that I wanted emulate this woman... even if in just a small way. I was reminded this when I read an article on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial ... I thought to myself- all these people died for us and all these people go to this memorial every year... the people that did not want recognition just to make a difference. this has humbled me.
Now I think to myself what can I do for my friends that will help them but love them with all I have.

Sweet Baby, visiting the "Wall" is a very humbling thing. I know...for I have worked 11 of the traveling Half-scale versions of the Traveling Wall, and have a 2nd cousin On that memorial. And I am very proud to say that I worked in the Veterans Administration for over 15 years.
There are 59, 400 names of men And 9 women adorn that Memorial, and believe me, it Does make one feel small and humble to stand in front of the 'big' one in Washington D.C. and it hurts your heart when you touch the embossed names there.
I am Proud of each and every name there, and am honored that they gave their lives so that we, all of us, could live our particular freedoms that we have today.

Stepping down off my soap box (Ow) lol
Cat.

It is interesting how we think of average everyday people, including ourselves, as not important because they/we were not people of fame or note, but when we realize how many lives are touched by the "unimportant" people, we begin to realize just how important the "unimportant" people really are, or were.

To add to my last post, here, the real understanding of how important each of us really is, watch the film "It's A Wonderful Life". The original with Jimmy Stewart. It really makes the point AND it's seasonal for this time of year.

I thank God and unprotected hetero penetrative sex for Fran being here.

:)

(My apologies - while I didn't mean to divert such a serious and worthwhile thread, I also could not pass up the handed-to-me-on-a-silver-platter opportunity provided by Fran)

I saw the traveling wall once near Harlan KY several years ago. We were on our motorcycle retuning from a NASCAR race and we stopped for gas. There were other bikers in the station and they asked me, "Are you going to the wall"? I didn't know it was going to be so close. We decided to take a little detour and see it. It's just a wall with a bunch of names but it's understated beauty hits you right between the eyes. I found the name of a navy pilot I was on the swimming team with in high school and made a rubbing of his name. I challenge anyone to do that without getting tears in your eyes.

Last fall I went to the funeral of a marine who was killed in Iraq. It was a full military funeral. I've been to funerals for vets who died and have seen the flag presented to the family but this was the first full military funeral I ever attended. What a beautiful ceremony with the marine pallbearers, flag draped coffin and 21 gun salute. The procession from the church in Kenosha to the military cemetery near Union Grove was at least a mile long. If you ever get a chance to attend a military funeral, by all means, do it. It's an experience you'll never forget and we all owe these soldiers so much.
