Thanks Volty - that was a very touching story. I was a dog handler when I served and the attachment and bond that one developes with their animal id indescribable. A closeness that can not be really explained, but only felt down deep.

yeah, this isn't uncommon among the marines and the stryker guys..for some reason they get more than their share of strays.. might be because they are out at the point of the spear more than most. and have more interaction with the people and animals. strykers at fort lewis? usually bring about 7 mutts home every time they rotate back after thier tours..

When I was in Grenada--one of the other boats brought back a three-legged dog from down there--they of course called it "tripod"--he became their mascot.

A lot of units "inherit" a mascot or two during times of war.

Not sure how they got em, but the Lafayette Esquadrille (WWI) had 2 lions named "Whiskey" and "Gin".

My dad made friends with a bulldog in Chu-Lai , Viet Nam 11/67-11/68 that no one else could even get near . He said it was a hell of a rat dog as well as a great watchdog .
