My second fresh hypothetical question for you all is a political one and is as follows;-

i) Would it be possible for the globe to have one single government such that there was only one governed nation here on earth?

ii) If you think this is possible, could the single global government be a totalitarian one or could it be a democratic one?

iii) Would it be a good thing if there was a totalitarian single global government?

iii) Would it be a good thing if there was a democratic single global government?

Once again, I look forward to reading any contributions to this thread. Hope you don't mind my diversions from the main.

i) No. One size does not fit all. It's bad enough living out here in the West and have to abide by the rules set by those knotheads in Washington. Easterners often don't have a clue what it's like to live in isolated western rural areas. How could a single government balance the needs and values of San Francisco and Riyadh. Then throw in other places like Bangalore, Shanghai and Nairobi. I don't think it would work.

The rest of the points are moot. Democracy is good for some, but not for others.

Democracy (or a representative version) works best when the government is closer to the governed. The further removed, the less likely they will have the best interests of the governed at heart.

But that's not to say there isn't a place for a group like the UN, if only it wasn't the corrupt entity it is now.

I have to say that I think it highly improbable if not impossible that we could ever have a total, one world government with one main leader.

Back in the deepest dark days of the cold war when the Soviets and the West were facing off against each other---it was thought that if the Soviets were to prevail---we would have a one world government, totalitarian regime--that did not happen.

In the post-cold war and now 9/11 era---we see actually much more regionalism breaking out---

A case in point is the Balkans--most of the countries that made up those states have now broken up and even the former Soviet Bloc nations--free of the boot of Soviet Socialism--have split up.

Look at Iraq--it has broken into three regions and could break up into smaller pieces---Afghanistan is breaking up into zones of influences of tribal warlords and a resurgent Taliban.

Parts of Africa have also broken into tribal zones-Somalia has no government--even Kenya--which was once one of the shinning lights of Africa is having serious problems.

In Colombia--the central government does not have total control of the nation with FARQ controlling vast interior jungle and mountainous regions.

There are actually some scholars at both ends of the political spectrum who say that the US could see a break up--with some even advocating that such a thing should take place--I don't think that is likely but then again--ya never can say never.

The only way that for the foreseeable future we could have a one world government--it would not be democratic--or if it started out that way--would soon devolve into an Orwellian nightmare of the first order----

I am afraid the Gene Roddenberry/Star Trek view of our future with a one world government at peace, and with poverty and other social ills banished and that Earth is part of an interstellar UN is nothing more than fiction--I hate to fall on the pessimistic side of things in this regard---but in these post 9/11 days---I have come to not have a great deal of faith that the future will be a brighter place---

Hahahahaha we are everywhere! ;) I'm not even that hardcore. Never been to a convention, don't know Klingon, and I've never dressed up like a character. I'm just into certain shows and the movies.

Alexander did it... Rome... all the 'known' world anyway. Hitler may have been the major reason Stalin didn't... and vice versa.
All governments will fail; democracy, theocracy, dictatorship. But with new technology, who knows?
