View Full Version : Favorite Break-up Songs

My girlfriend broke up with me a little over a week ago. And I'm bouncing between all the different emotions right now, getting ambushed by sadness and anger every day. I use music to cope. I find it cathartic.

So, what are your favorite break-up songs? Which songs have helped you through a break-up?

My niece unknowingly turned me on to a few good ones today (were on her i-pod).

For hope: "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield

For anger/empowerment: "Believe" by Cher
(sample lyric: "Maybe I'm too good for you.")

Others I've been listening to:

Anger: "The Bitch of Living" from musical Spring Awakening
"Get Free" by the Vines (*screaming* "She never loved me!")
"Health and Happiness" by The Wallflowers ("I wish you health. I
wish you happiness. But absolutely nothing else.")
"Hate Me" by Blue October
"I'll Stick Around" by the Foo Fighters ("I don't owe you anything!")
"Stronger" by Trust Company ("I am stronger now") This one's also
empowering.

Sad: "The Side of the Road" by Lucinda Williams
"Good Riddance" by Green Day ("I hope you've had the time of your
life.") I finally understand this song is bitter and sincere at the same
time.
"How's It Going to Be" by Third Eye Blind ("How's it going to be when
you don't know me anymore?")
almost anything by Ryan Adams

Not ones I'm currently using, but have in the past or will for future break-ups:
"No Hard Feelings" by Bloodhound Gang ("It's not my job to fuck you on your birthday anymore.")

"Give Judy My Notice" by Ben Folds ("Judy, I can't be your bitch anymore...")

"Cold Hard Bitch" by Jet (She actually maintains this was our song. LOL  It was one of the ones we danced to the weekend we met.)

"Used to Love Her" by Guns-N-Roses

I was initially hesitant to listen to angry songs since we're still trying to maintain our friendship. But yesterday she expressed concern that I might not have anyone to talk to about "what a bitch" she iss (her words, not mine). So I know she realizes I have these feelings and have to work through them even though we're still talking every night (long-distance relationship).

I'm especially interested in really angry songs and really empowering songs. The one good thing about the break-up is that it has been empowering in some ways. I am getting more in touch with myself and even liking who I am. I still have a lot of work to do around this, though, before I ever consider getting into another committed relationship. I want to become more authentic and less of a people-pleasing nice guy. I also want to explore my attraction to other guys before being in a committed relationship with either gender.

Thanks for reading this far.:)

Life's to short so try this one:

Brand New Girlfriend – Steve Holly

[verse: 1]
she said, "I need sometime to find myself,
I need a little space to think.
maybe we should start seeing other people.
baby, things are moving way to fast for me."
so, i, I picked up what was left of my pride,
and I put on my walking shoes,
and I got up on that high road,
and I did what any gentleman would do..
i, um...

[chorus]
I got a brand new girlfriend.
we went and jumped off the deep end,
flew out to LA for the weekend,
spent the whole day, lyin' on the beach,
wearin' nothin' but a smile,
playin' kissy-kissy, smoochy-smoochy,
talkin' mooshy-mooshy bout nothin'.
man, I think im on to somethin',
yano I feel just like a kid again.
I got a brand new girlfriend.

[verse: 2]
I love it when she calls me butter cup,
laughs and says I left the toilet seat up,
she pops and tosses me a cold beer,
and says my buddies always welcome here.
when I get hungry, she takes me out.
I ride the shotgun like a shitzu hound.
my tails a waggin', my tounges hangin' out,
it makes me wanna shout...

[chorus]

wooo...
cute, cute, cute...

she likes to write our names in the sand.
shes hearing wedding bells and making plans.
shes gonna hang around a while I guess.
she hasnt even told me she loves me yet.

[chorus]

she makes me feel just like a kid again,
I gotta brand new girlfriend

Hey,
Breakups can be really REALLY painful. Music can be key in the process of your recovery. Just be careful, listening to a song that is appropriate for a time can become a favorite, and then, unconciously you can prevent your own healing by listening to a favorite song over and over and over.

I have several I recommend for temporary listening.

Anger/empowering

Thoughtless by Korn
Did my Time by Korn
boiler by limpbiscuit
can I get a.... by jay-z
send the pain below by chevelle
The 13th step (whole album) by A perfect circle

New start/life songs
Hello by poe
cross of changes (whole album) by enigma

Theory of a deadman
sarah mclachlan

whoa, it's way too late for me to be posting. I've tons more, holler at me if you need more.

IMHO, I try not to listen such songs since they only prolong and exacerbate the agony, but I remember one song that "helped" push me forwards when I emerged from a long dark tunnel 13 years ago. Strange, but now when I hear it, it has no resonance back to that time, all I hear is a great pop song.

Wen Kate stormed outa the door last year this wos me blub song

Long Long Time - Linda Ronstadt

Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice but there's no one at my side
And time washes clean love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me but I don't know what it means.

Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time

Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me for a long long time

Wait for the day
You'll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I'd have to pay
And life's full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I've done everything I know to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time.

S'funny, but I dont mind reminders once life's back to normal. I dont think there's any wrong with an occassional reminiscence

Well, they are snap shots of the past in the same way that photographs encompass and encapsulate a moment in time - gone, but not forgotten

Sounds like you still love her, but you're pissed off too, so try this one

Hope you never ~ Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

I hope you never fall in love
Hope you never get your heart broken
I hope you never fall in love
With somebody like you

I hope you never give a damn
Hope you never lose your perspective
I hope you never fall in love
With somebody like you

(Chorus)
I wish you well
I wish you everything and more
Forgive my ignorance
I was starting to ramble on and on
Starting to ramble on and on

I hope you never need no one
Hope you treasure your independence
I hope you never fall in love
With somebody like you

(Chorus)

I hope you never give a damn
Hope you never get your heart broken
I hope you never fall in love
With somebody like you

I hope you never fall in love
With somebody like you

Maggie Mae is a great one too. I figure everybody has heard that on so I won't put the lyrics up.

Bah, I can probably outclass all you peeps when it comes to break up. OOOh boy! Have I got thee list for you.

Indy, is probably one of the sappiest genres of rock out there so I'll start with that.

Yellow Card: "Whiney, but good indy. they usually write about everything imaginable in a relationship and they're usually smack dab on the rocker"

Big apple Heartbreak
Cigarette
Something Of Value
For Pete's Sake

The Early November. "Emo at its best, songs written with sincerity right up beside the lines of DashBoard Confessional."

Come Back

Dashboard confessional: "Acoustic indy, guess what? its all up the way with Yellow Card but with a different flavor."

Am I Missing
Hey Girl
If You Cant, Leave it be.
Several ways to die trying.

Dave Matthews: "polly one of the best acoustic jam bands, y'all know who I'm talking about"

Grey Street
My Grace is Gone

So now walking onto a different genre, getting into more rock - pop.

Emery: "prolly one of the best bands to relate to when going through a break up. Caution to the old, Screamo galore but they're actually quite talented at it."

As Your Voice Fades
So Cold I can See My Breath

Fall Out Boy: "Good rock, kinda like Panic at the Disco, mixed with Yellow Card and Starting Line."

Where is your boy tonight?
Sugar were going down.

The Finalist "Probably most on edge about emo rock, way different from indy they have a very unique style that pops out from different bands."

Rain.

And moving on to contemporary acoustic again, None Other than Jack Johnson. They guy who wrote the music for Curious George.

Sitting, Waiting, Wishing.
Gone, Gone, Gone.

And now popping back into mainstream rock.

3 Doors Down
- 3am

Brand New
-Guernica

And yea I really cant think of any more but I got loads, Indy Rock is the gem for emo crap. =)

"Always something there to remind me"

walk along the city streets you used to walk along with me,
and every step I take reminds me of just how we used to be.
Well, how can I forget you, girl?
When there is always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.
As shadows fall, I pass a small cafe where we would dance at night.
And I can't help recalling how it how it felt to kiss and hold you tight
Well, how can I forget you, girl?
When there is always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.
I was born to love her, and I'll never be free.
You'll always be a part of me.

If you should find you miss the sweet and tender love we used to share.
Just go back to the places where we used to go, and I'll be there
Well, how can I forget you, girl?
When there is always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.
I was born to love her, and I'll never be free
You'll always be a part of me.
'cause there is always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.

I walk along the city streets you used to walk along with me,
and every step I take reminds me of just how we used to be.
Well, how can I forget you, girl?

always something there to remind me.
I was born to love her, and I'll never be free.
You'll always be a part of me.

always something there to remind me.
I was born to love her, and I'll never be free
You'll always be a part of me.
'cause there is always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.
always something there to remind me.

You ain't worth the salt in my tears. early 80s, by Brian somebody

I never did it - no, I won't admit it.
Why should I lie for you anymore?
You never loved me - you pushed and shoved me.
I see the woman I never saw.
I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted -
It still hurts but the pain has shifted.
I'm looking back at the time that drifted by
But I won't cry for the wasted years...
'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears.

Feeling neglected, used, and rejected:
You need a shoulder to lean upon.
Baby, you've picked him - found your next victim -
Don't worry; someone will come along.
I broke the spell that you kept me under.
I had enough of your rain and thunder.
I lost track of the time and I wonder why,
But I won't cry for the wasted years...
'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears.

I'll sit around and drink a few more beers
Until the memory just disappears…
'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears!

I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted -
It still hurts but the pain has shifted.
I'm looking back at the time that drifted by
But I won't cry for the wasted years...
'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears.

'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears.
'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears.

This one has haunted the fuck out of me since I first heard it, god, must have been 13 years ago.

The Cranberries- Daffodil Lament

Holding on, that's what I do since I met you.
And it won't be long. Would you notice if I left you?
And it's fine for some 'cause you're not the one,
You're not the one there...
There... there... there... there... there...

All night long, laid on my pillow,
These things are wrong.
I can't sleep here!

So lovely, so lovely, so lovely.

I have decided to leave you forever.
I have decided to start things from here.
Thunder and lightning won't change,
What I'm feeling and the daffodils look lovely today,
And the daffodils look lovely today,
Look lovely today.

Ooh, in your eyes I can see the disguise.
Ooh, in your eyes I can see the dismay.
Has anyone seen lightning?
Has anyone looked lovely?
And the daffodils look lovely today,
And the daffodils look lovely today,
Look lovely today...

Look lovely

Na, na. Na, na na na...

I mostly like oldies.
For the sad breakup song, "Without you" by Badfinger. I know it was Harry Nilsson's cover that made it famous, but the original is sad and almost haunting.

Angry/hurt breakup song, "Hair of the dog" by Nazareth. Also much of Nine Inch Nails music.

Melancholy music, almost anything from Nick Drake.
