But I wonder how many here have had consensual sex with a family member as an adult or have fantasized about it?
I've heard rumors occasionally of people who've engaged in consensual sex (or sadly, sometimes non-consensual) sex with brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

This is one of those weird issues that is almost taboo even here. It pops up every now and again and always seems to bring some tension to the table. Its hard to judge cu on one hand, were raised to believe it is wrong and immoral, and even the most open minded of people are still close minded about this. On the other hand we were also raised by society to think that homosexuality, bisexuality, polygamy, and even masturbation are immoral and wrong as well. So what is it about incest that makes even the most liberal open minded and accepting crowd cringe? Its it truly unnatural? If we look at animals in their natural environment we can see that incest is much more common then Homosexuality, yet we all claim that homosexuality is not unnatural. And if we judge it as unnatural, then arnt we doing the same thing as the people who discriminate against homo and bisexuality? Its ture that reproductively incest results in a weaker genetic pool because of the lack of diversity between the genes being donated by the mother and father. But then with homosexuality, here is no reproduction at all so we cant really use that argument either.

So it must be something on the human level rather then a natural level that makes incest so looked down upon. Family (in most cases) are the closest people to your life, even closer then the deepest lover. You never have to pretend to be someone else around them and they understand you in ways other never could. They are there since you were born and will be with you your entire life. Does the closeness of this kind of relationship make sex an unfathomable act? Are family members to intimate for sex? doesnt that go against our general concepts of love? I think most of the discomfort we feel about incest comes from the idea that it could complicate the family relationship so much, and would cause us to feel shame in front of our family members/partners and thus destroying some of the openness of the family relationship. But then this shame and complication would be dirived from the fact that incest is frowned upon in the first place, so this is just really a catch 22 with no start and no end. We feel ashamed of incest because it can cause the destruction of family relationships, and it destroys family relationships because of the shame we feel.

In the end, the way I try to understand it is that there are different kinds of love and each fulfill a different purpose. Your love for your family members is a different kind of love then that for romantic partners and hence serves a different purpose in your life. Some kinds of love naturally work well with sex, and others dont. For me I have been able to identify 3 main general types of love: Lust, romance, and family. All 3 have different properties. For example with lust you have to be attracted to the person physically, but not emotionally to be in lust with someone. With Romantic love you dont necessarily have to be physically attracted so much to a person, but you do have to have an emotional connection that you dont need for lust. With family love you dont need to have physical attraction and you dont really even need to like the person on a personality level to love them. And each kind of love fills a different purpose in your life. Lust fulfills the raw physical urges and needs of the body. Romance fulfills a deep need for a emotional connection and passion for another. Family love fulfills a need to belong to a group of your fellow species who will always look after you no matter what. With Lust and Romance sex is a necessary part of the fulfillment (more so with Lust, but with romance, sex is the deepest expression of passion and romance). With family love it is not required and not part of that kind of love. Now that doesnt mean that a person cant find lust or romance from a family member, it just means that in a traditional sense sex with family is not generally done because its not needed to fulfill the need that family is traditionally there for, hence it is looked down upon by most.

Personally I have never felt lust or romance from a family member, but who am I to judge that it is wrong. If a person can fulfill 2 or more kinds of love needs then it must be a truly special connection. If you think back a few generations (or even 1) homosexuality and bisexuality were seen with the same level of distaste as incest is today, so who knows what it might be like in another generation. If 2 family members really truly love each other on a romantic and/or lustful way, then Im not going to deny them.

I wouldnt condemn or condone incestuous acts between consenting adults, because its one of those subjects which societ does fee strongly about and in western society at least is a taboo. I for one have never had the least sexual interest in either my brother or sister, though my sister does have certain physical attributes which I would die for!! Nor would my parents ever have dreamed of abusing their children.

What we as an oppressed and oft condemned group should be is supportive of the stress and trauma of this even more oppressed group of human beings, even if we do not approve of the act itself. For do we not expect the same from the rest of the world? Whether it is something to be tolerated is an issue which even I, as a very liberated woman with few sexual taboos have difficulty with. Children will play and experiment, and siblings are no different from any other group of children. They should never be condemned for sexual interraction with each but loved and cherished and brought to realise the enormity and consequences of their experimentation, and to be helped through what could be a difficult time. Some siblings are bullied we all know that and sexual bullying may be as prevelant I suppose as any between siblings I dont know. Obviously different steps should be taken here but these should be as much dealing with the bullying problem as the incestuous one.

With consenting adults.. maybe its time we did look at this. It goes against the grain to clamp down on anyones sexual freedom in a sexual consenual non abusive relationship. Yet I have my upbringing to consider, and it nags away at me. We are all products of our upbringing and mine told me inest was wrong. I havent ever been able to reconcile my libertarian beliefs with this aspect of my upbringing. Though I cannot bring myself to condemn, and will always support and give love to people who have to undergo something which is as often as not against their upbringing I have difficulty in condoning. I hate taboos. Certainly I hate the taboo of discussing taboos. It forces people underground, and creates much misery and unhappiness. As a mother of an 8 year old daughter and mother to be very soon I find it horrifying that my children would or could ever develop such a relationship.
