john trovalta has been getting a lot of crap lately for his role in the movie hairspray. many people are saying that he is a hypocrite for starring in a role where he crossdresses because his religion, scientology, is completely against homosexuality. i personally think this is stupid.
1. just because you crossdress doesn't mean you are homosexual. if anyone understands how people came up with this conclusion, please explain it to me because maybe it's just because i don't understand...
and
2. it's a role that he is playing in a movie! it isn't real life!
why can't an actor act without people having something to say? does this mean that gay men in hollywood should never have a role in a movie or on a tv show again unless the character they play is obviously homosexual? does this mean that christian actresses will never be able to play a pagan?
why does he have to be labeled a hypocrite because he is doing his job? the point of acting isn't to be yourself in the role. the point is to be another person, otherwise it wouldn't be acting. so honestly, what's the problem?

what I can't understand is why they are making a remake of Hairspray. Btw Scientology is a hoax good old L Ron made a bet with an artist that he could make a religon and he won but died before he could collect.

It's because in straight America, if you want to look like a woman, you must therefore be attracted to men. Which is a unfounded conclusion - Look at all the femme dykes out there.
2. it's a role that he is playing in a movie! it isn't real life!?
Yes he's an actor, but again to most americans if you play that part then you must be that part - Clint Eastwood is a real tough guy right?

Technically he is a hypocrite since the word means one who plays a role. But that would make all actors hypocrites.
But seriously, people believe what they want to about people. Remember how popular Patrick Swaze was until he starred in that Drag movie of course, after that it was all downhill for him.
I think it is scary how people see things up on that screen and try to relate them to the persons actual life.

I am a life long cross dresser, and i am bi, but i am a minority as far as cross dressers go!!
(imo)85% of cross dressers are striaght i have witnessed this through a few of the more serious cross dressing mags ( not so much of the porn variety)
and who really cares?
i have always liked John Travolta way back from his "break through" in TV welcome back kotter
to me, his role in hair spray tells me he has ball enough to do a "project" like that, i dont see him any differently as an actor, or human being
thank you for my :2cents: here!!!

At the same pridefest event I mentioned in "Word is Spreading" there was a table next to ours of gentlemen who publish an area cross-dressing publication. It was educational for me to learn that there are straight guys who just like wearing women's clothing - they were very adamant that there was nothing "physically sexual" about it.
Not that I think Travolta is a cross-dresser, he is simply playing a role. Acting has a long tradition of men in drag anyway - WTF .. I think the funde conservatives are losing it - things are changing too fast and they don't like it..their own faith is being called into question and they think "the world is coming to an end".
The world has been spinning for many thousands of years, but their ideological viewpoint certainly could be losing its luster..which might feel like a lot of mental and spiritual pressure..as if the sky was falling.
As for remake of Hairspray - either they are trying bringing it out of broadway (like "Rent").
More likely 70% of the stuff mainstream studios make now is crap, and since they don't have any NEW original ideas (or are afraid to use them) - they take old ideas and gloss them up with new digital effects and such..it the only thing left that sells.
I'm all for technology - but personally when I go to the movies I would like to see REAL actors and REAL props .. you know these people have imagination when they do all their dialog in front of a f'king bluescreen.

And for the record - this remake looks like crap too .. I probably won't waste my money.

It's too bad people can't separate acting from reality. But then a good actor is one that can make you believe they are a character they play even when they aren't anything alike.

What can I say? Thats what ACTING is all about: PRETENDING to be something you're NOT. The way I see it, WHATEVER role you play in a work of fiction, the chances are that it has VERY LITTLE to do with who you are in REAL LIFE.
That said, there are a few instances where art immitates life and vice versa...

I agree..... I have also heard a lot of actors/actresses say the best part about acting is you get to play roles of characters that you would never do in real life!!!
Sometimes I think actors/actresses uses acting to experiment things they wouldn't do in real life but its still acting. But in a way it lets them try out new things just to see.
Cross Dressing... so what?? John knew what he was gonna have to do when he auctioned for the role... Im sure John would have known he'll get both postive and negative comments.
The guy on "The 40 Year Old Virgin" sure he was 40.. BUT HE WAS NOT A VIRGIN in real life lol he was a married man with a few kids.
Neve Campbell has made out with girls in "Wild Things" and "When will I find love?" (i think thats it?) and we rarely hear about her lesbian scenes in the media, no one makes a big deal of it.
I don't get why some actors/actresses get harsh feedback while others have done somewhat the same roles and go unnoticed!! (ya you know but its not all over the media)
But as an actor/actress, you KNOW you'll be judged based on your roles.... surely John knew this but he wasn't gonna let that stop him. He wanted the role cause it would be fun (to him). Something different for a change.

Travolta is a decent actor who's been in some interesting movoies. By all accounts I've heard (I know a few people in "show business"...), Travolta is a nice enough guy. The word also is that he is (or has been) bi.
Scientology is looney tunes. But at least Travolta doesn't put the looneyness in your face the way some other good-looking but short, dim-witted actors do...
As far as Travolta getting grief for cross-dressing in the movie -- for the amount of money he made doing it, he can afford to tell them (as we used to say in my college days), "f*ck 'em if they can't take a joke!"

Because sexuality is a huge driving factor in the human psyche. And because it it a primary impulse therefor it has huge power in it in terms of controlling human beings. By attempting to regulate the human sexual drive, denying it and then allowing it to exist only under your own terms and conditions you attempt to control a society.
Leash the raging beast that is inside all of us and attach that leash to certain religious authorities and those authorities will have more power over someone. The way you dress, how you spend your free time, what you eat, what you think-all of these things have huge impact on how people behave and are regulated by religious authority. The only time behavior supression isn't really stressed in religions or believe systems is when it is a system that has no hierarchy or rejects the concept of a heirarchy. But the most prevalent religions in this world do have a heirarchy system.

I was hoping someone would bring up "To Wong Foo...". To the best of my recollection, they didn't get this level of grief and no one accused any of the three actors of being gay.
This is just more proof that the average IQ is dropping exponentially with each generation.

Doesn't anyone remember ROBIN WILLIAMS dressed as a woman too??
Mrs. Doubtfire with Sally Field.
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0107614/
He played a father who was unhappy with the divorce and not being able to see his kids.... so in order to see them, he dressed up as a Nanny since his wife was looking for one.
Before he picks the Mrs Doubtfire look, we see a series of other woman looks on him. lol
You could tell he was having fun. I don't remember people ever giving him horrible reviews for that? The movie also had a gay couple too although we didn't see much of them.

There's such a long tradition of men dressing as women for the theatre that one would hope this would have been a complete non-issue. BTW, F. Scott Fitzgerald did a drag act for a theatrical at Princeton; a photo of him in costume has survived and he looks damn good! :)
Back around 1948 L. Ron Hubbard made a speech at a science-fiction convention in which he stated that if one really wanted to make a lot of money, founding a church was the way to do it. He took his own advice and ended up snaring many thousands of poor souls to his profit. All very sad.

Thats right!! Back in Shakespear's time Women WERE NOT ALLOWED to act. It was forbidden..... women roles had to be played by men.
In fact, if an woman was caught acting, she was in serious trouble. Only men were acceptable to act. As men and women characters.
It was only much much much later when they started to allow women to do the women roles.
People seem to forget that men playing women roles has existed for hundreds of years... especially when it was once against the law for a woman to act.
