Personally, I would like to thank Vittoria for sharing this transcript with us. I have not been active in the chatrooms for over a year and I had no idea about how severe the situation was. If this is the state of affairs on a regular basis, then yes, as a community we have a problem.

About six months after I joined the website, there was a time when the forums were much like this. There were a few hot-headed people who would hijack threads and rant and mudsling; they would usually get tired after a few weeks of unresponsiveness from the rest of us and then go away.

But it seems that in the chatroom some of these new trolls are more skilled at provoking people. I think creating alternative chatrooms is a great start.

We should also alert Drew about the situation and perhaps save transcripts of overtly hostile language in the chatroom. He can boot people off the site.

Other than that, I would like to state, for the record, that I love all kinds of people who are part of this community -- whether they have been called "fags", "dykes", or "shitlickers" or whatever else. We should try our best to remain positively focused on the people who have become real friends through bisexual.com, even if some of them may have disappeared over the years. Let's not get too distracted by the assholes, of which the world is always in ample supply, wherever you go.

I came here to get help and guidance about something that has rocked my world completely and I think it's very sad that people who could help are overshadowed by the stupidity of a few. While I get that some ppl are here for that (and I think that's fine...I'm not passing judgements) I'm not here for that. I know I don't frequent chat very often. I'm a reformed chat addict, having at one time regularly spent 14+ hour days in roleplaying chat rooms. But I COMPLETELY understand why things get turned upside down when a Troll shows up. How would you feel if someone walked into your home and started in on you the way OG was going off in the room?

That's what this place is for many people here...a second home. A safe place. When someone comes in and dumps all over that safety in such a vile manner I think it's perfectly reasonable to flip out.

Why should we have to take abuse just because we decide to use the chat room and talk to friends :eek: I'm not normally in favour of "big brother" style moderation of chat rooms, however I've noticed a general trend over the last six months or so of an increasing number of morons causing trouble and think the time time has come to have some moderation even if its just to suspend the user concerned and refer to matter to Drew to consider a pernament ban.

I thought this site was meant to be a safe haven for us Bi and Bi friendly folks to chat and communicate with out the biggoted hateful remarks we may experience in the Str8 and possibly Gay communities. If we start disusing chat or other parts of the site it wont be long before the community fails, some of you might not care if it does but I for one certainly do.

Step #2 would be to talk about different methods of dealing with pesky and uncooperative flamers. Some say use the ignore button (my preferred method), others say start your own chatroom, others say go to Hell and leave the site entirely, while others say not to care.

Step #3 is to find out which methods from Step #2 haven't worked well for everyone. Apparently some people can't just stop caring, and the annoying culprits manipulate people's sensitive spots to create drama that neutralizes the otherwise soothing relief of one's "ignore" option. So we have to turn to some kind of external authority -- the "God" figure in our microcosm, which is of course Drew.

Step #4 is to wait and see if Drew can fix the problem, and if he can't, to go back to Step #2.

Seems like we're doing everything we can, and even if it won't be perfect on here, at least we can all rest assured that other people in our web community care and want to make us feel comfortable.

i think for the most part the chatroom is civil, and this is definately a community that does pull together, and the people on here do care about the environment of the site

i also think that there's very few people that wouldn't be aware that there's a certain amount of risk that some people just aren't going to work an play well with others. Especially where the text isn't going to be permanent unless someone saves the chat (and many thanks also to the ones that do that and forward it to Drew)

having said that i'm very confident that Drew's being kept up to date on the goings on of the site as a result of the community and that he's doing an outstanding work of keeping the site running with as few issues as possible

however, i'm wondering if it would be a good suggestion to segregate the forums.... a place on the forums for these kinds of issues? rather than having these posts be an attraction for troublemakers...

I agree that a moderator would keep this type of trash from happening. Personal opinions being what they are, I personally think this was probably a hetero kid getting his kicks. The only problem with a moderator is getting the logistics of who performs the duties and when. The ability to kick miscreants such as oralguy off the system would be worth the trouble though.

On a more personal note, I have found that Bi people in general tend to have a little thicker skin than most. We don't tend to be so insecure about ourselves, and usually let comments like oralguy's drop off until they get out of hand. I am glad you clarified the situation, arana....those who have not been present during clashes with Oralguy have no idea what the chat room has been going through for almost a year now. I also feel compelled to point out one other fact. For many of us, our problems with Oralguy started when we refused his advances through private messages. If you politely declined to share his delight of "man sausage and girl juice", he promptly labeled you a dyke in the main room. When it was pointed out that I was straight, I was promptly labled as a not only a male, but a "faggot"....when once again reminded that I was female and straight, I became labeled by him as a hater of bi people after which he wished for me to "go away and die", as I had no other use to him. I do believe Arana received the very same treatment culminating in the request to "go away and die" as well. It is very hurtful for those of us who have grown to care about one another to see one of our friends get treated in this manner. YES..maybe we should have just ignored him...and yes..maybe printing the transcript in the forum was not the right avenue to take...but simple messages that I sent to Drew did no good as I had no way of proving my conversation...it was "He Said, She Said"...and in defense of Drew, hardly fair to expect him to make a choice. Saving that night's chat as Vittoria did was instrumental in proving, once and for all, that Oralguy did NOT have the best interest of the chat rooom in mind and that he only chatted to get his rocks off by being mean and hurtful. I am glad the SOB is gone and I thank Vitt, Arana, and Bare and the many others who messaged Drew that night and for bringing this episode to an end.

That being said...can we please quit furthering the devisiveness of our community by being critical of intent???

Couldn't have said it better my self thank you arana. I negleted to say thank you to Vittoria earlier for publicly raising the ever increasing problem of abusive morons in chat on the forum.

Regarding emailing Drew when morons are in chat causing trouble, if the trend of an increasing amount of morons continues its going to create a lot of extra work for Drew to sort out. And although he does as fantastic job and reacts very quickly on most occasions there are bound to be times when he isnt going to be around to swiflt sort the problem. Although at the end of the day I guess its down to Drew to decide if he wants to ask for help with moderation.

Segregate means to separate, and in the context it was used "segregate the forums" I would think would mean to have a separate forum for dealing with issues...like a lot of people have been suggesting.

People can have a differeant perspective than yours Vitt, and we can still be supportive of this site and community.

Like a lot of other's this saddens me a great deal when something like this happens to the community. I want to thank Vittoria for bringing this to Drew's attention. And thank Drew for taking care of the problem.. But i was there on the day that oralguy attacked Kate, which did happen. She did nothing in the way of provoking such a backlash from this guy. I agree we do need room moderator or moderators, there is to much trouble in here. we need to do something more than just use a iggy or the ones who cause problems will never learn and will keep comming back to cause more problems.

For those of you who used to chat on bisexual.org (before the chat there went screwy and eventually the site went into a permanent 'reconstruction' phase), I was one of the original moderators. Some of you may remember me as 'stephen'.

For the five years I was doing it, moderation was pretty much left to dealing with the bi/homophobes, underagers and those who attack others in the room. Otherwise, things were pretty loose and easy. I've given a standing offer to help out *if* it's felt that some sort of moderation is needed for the chatroom here. I haven't been around too much lately this month (and missed much of the chat thread referenced in the first post) but I do know that bi.com's chat is one of the only ones I know for those of us who aren't of the vanilla style, that is not moderated.
