This is bugging me now! lol!

Sol is trying to find a song that he heard a few years ago, but all he remembers is one word that is repeated in the chorus - alaya.

It's possibly an 80s song....sung by a male (could be a band with male vocals), slightly higher than average voice.

Not much to go on lol! Anyone know what song this might be??

When googling, I came up with 2 possiblities with just alaya to go by. One was an arabic song titled Alaya, but I don't think that's the one you had in mind.

The other didn't have alaya in the lyrics, but sounded close to it. It's an 80's song. Kyrie, by Mister Mister. (male lead singer)

Lyrics:
The wind blows hard against this mountain side
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old it holds my memories
My baby burns agem like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again

*CHORUS*
Kyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be

Oh...Oh...Oh
Oh...Oh...Oh
Oh...Oh...Oh
Oh...Oh...Oh

(repeat to end)

Sol's at work right now, but I found a copy of that song and I have it now, so I guess we'll see if that might be the one! :)

He wasn't completely sure if they were saying "alaya" or something similar...and you're right...it does sound similar.

Will let you know if that's the one.

Thanks!! :tong:

I am willing to bet that the song Sol is thinking of is Steve Earle's "John Walker's Blues" from the CD "Jerusalem"--the song was about the young American man who had converted to Islam and was caught by US troops in Afghanistan then tried and convicted as an "enemy combatant" and sentenced to life in prison.

The reframe of the song goes: "A shandu, la liaha llla Allah, There is no God But God!"

Could it be Desert Rose by Sting? Here are the lyrics:

Ley leye ley leyee oh oh wow wow..
Hai beeno belep beeno
Venenha vesanowa ah dola dola dolati
Venenha vesanowa ah dola dola dolati
Venenha vesanowaa..
Ah me pasandi
I dream of rain ley le le..
Vesonowaa
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain a ley le le..
Vesonowaa…
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
I dream of fire aye aye..
Oh oh eh
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames leye leye
Oh oh oh
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire
This desert rose leye leye
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower leye leye
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this
And now she turns leye leye
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns leye leye
I realize that nothing's as it seems
I dream of rain leye leye
Oh oh oh
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain leye leye
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
I dream of rain leye leye
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes, this rare perfume Is the sweet intoxication of her love…
Oh mona mona mona mona mona oh....
I dream of rain ley leye
Venoha vesonowa ah no da
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain ley leye
Vesonowaa..
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
Sweet desert rose leye leye
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower ley leye,
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this
Sweet desert rose leye leye
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower,
this rare perfurme Is the sweet intoxication of the fall
Yoo..

Great guess. I thought of this one too, but it's not an 80's song like Flex said, so ! ruled it out.

Probably not the right song but the only one I can think of that sounds like that is Ah Leah by Donnie Iris:

Yeah, it's been a long, long time.
Such a site, you're lookin' better than a body has a right to.
Don't you know we're playin' with the fire?
But we can stop this burnin' desire, Leah!

Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Is it ever gonna end?
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah!

I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissin' them.
I never knew how badly I was missin' them.
We both know we're never going to make it,
but when we touch, we never have to fake it, Leah!

Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Is it ever gonna end?
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! We ain't learned our lesson yet!

Baby, it's no good. We're just askin' for trouble.
I can touch you, but I don't know how to love you.
It ain't no use! We'er headed for disaster.
Our minds said, "No!" But our hearts were talkin' faster, Leah!

Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Leah, Leah, Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!

Ah! Leah, Leah, Leah!
Ah! Leah! We're never, ever, ever gonna make it yeah!
Ah! Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!

When Clapton sang it while in Derek & the Dominos, his voice reached somewhat high pitches in some parts of the song, so it's not impossible.

So far it's not the Mister Mister one....not the spanish one and not the John Walker one.

He says it's definately in english....it's a rock song....and it's something he heard prior to the year 2000. (so I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be an 80s song.....) and he heard it on the radio....

men....geeesh lol!

I'm gonna see if I can locate the other songs mentioned here...thanx! And keep the suggestions coming!

I'm so happy that THIS THREAD IS ENDED....

I have been walking around ALL day humming (cause I don't know the words) and whistling with an occasional spoken, "ALAYA", and people are askin me if I am okay. I am lookin at them with this embarrased look on my face and trying to explain that I am trying to remember a song, and no I don't know the tune, and NO I don't remember the lyrics and if I did would I just be humming.... !!!!!

So thank all of you that contributed and now I also know the words but I still can't remember the tune. Would all who contributed the RIGHT information please, please include the tune notes with your next posting?

Thanks and I appreciate your keeping me out of the 'funny farm' and returning me to my rightful place among my co-workers.
