View Full Version : MUSIC - What Feeds Your Soul?

What songs or lyrics do you relate to? Do you have any particular favourites that "dig deep"? Or some that just "suit the mood"? Maybe motivational to you? Or the ones that just kinda get the frustration out?
After about a 15 year period of completely avoiding music, I rediscovered it when I met Sol.
I think I avoided it for so long, cuz it had the effect of breaking down emotional barriers for me...it was like a hair trigger for me for a very long time...after about 5 seconds of certain songs, I'd be a tidal wave of tears.
I still cry sometimes with music....but it sure can be "cleansing" too!
We have a huge collection of music that spans just about everything (except rap...lol...just not a fan of it....to each his own  )
Everything from Metallica, Skid Row and Ozzy Osbourne to Michael W. Smith and Mozart....and everything in between.
These are a few of the songs that "dig deep" emotionally for me:
Michael W. Smith - Breathe
Michael W. Smith - My Place In This World
Hans Zimmer - Chevaliers de Sangreal
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
Mariah Carey - Hero
Audio Adrenaline - Leaving Ninety-Nine
John Parr - St. Elmo's Fire
Skid Row - Wasted Time
White Snake - Here I Go Again
Survivor - Burning Heart
Whitney Houston - One Moment in Time
Tears For Fears - Woman in Chains
Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer
Ozzy Osbourne - S.I.N.
Moody Blues - The Voice
and lots more....
and the one that "broke" my music avoidance and let loose the floodgates many years ago: (I still can't listen to this one without crying!)
This one really hits on the "labels" thing for me too....
Here's the lyrics to it...
Mark Wills - Don't Laugh At Me
(Allen Shamblin/Steve Seskin)
I'm a little boy with glasses
The one they call the geek
A little girl who never smiles
'Cause I've got braces on my teeth
And I know how it feels
To cry myself to sleep
I'm that kid on every playground
Who's always chosen last
A single teenage mother
Tryin' to overcome my past
You don't have to be my friend
But is it too much to ask
Don't laugh at me
Don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain
In God's eyes we're all the same
Someday we'll all have perfect wings
Don't laugh at me
I'm the cripple on the corner
You've passed me on the street
And I wouldn't be out here beggin'
If I had enough to eat
And don't think I don't notice
That our eyes never meet
I lost my wife and little boy when
Someone cross that yellow line
The day we laid them in the ground
Is the day I lost my mind
And right now I'm down to holdin'
This little cardboard sign...so
Don't laugh at me
Don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain
In God's eyes we're all the same
Someday we'll all have perfect wings
Don't laugh at me
I'm fat, I'm thin, I'm short, I'm tall
I'm deaf, I'm blind, hey, aren't we all
Don't laugh at me
Don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain
In God's eyes we're all the same
Someday we'll all have perfect wings
Don't laugh at me

I like almost all kinds of music but my favorite cd is a collaboration of
YoYo Ma and Bobby McFerrin. My other favorite is Linda Ronstadt "What's New"; she sings old 40's favorites. I also like music from the Andes Mountains- a group named Los Indos Trabajas. They have intricate rhythms and flutes.
On the flip side, I can always do a good lip sync to Queen.
And my other preferences are jazz, big band, swing, rock, pop, and of course -good ol' Texas country music. Buckle shining to a good country waltz or two-step is so romantic.
Great topic!
And a good cry is always so cleansing as well as a good soak in the hot tub.

My musical taste is varied and of the long list of styles and artists that I like-It tend to go in cycles as to which groups I like and styles.
Right now I am very much into a "hometown" group-Over the Rhine of Cincinnati--they have a new limited release just out that I am waiting each day in the mail to receive--on that-they have a great version of Gillian Welch's "Orphan Girl" on the relase--"Over the Rhine: Live from Nowhere Vol. 2"
I also saw a repeat show of performance of Coldplay on Austin City Limits and even though I have heard of their music--watching them perform made me decide that I am going to have to add them to my playlist, so I need to get some of their releases.

Honestly, Music is integral to my life. There isn't enough space on the web to list all the stuff I can groove to.
Suffice to say that I love almost all of it, depending on my mood :)

Music is such a big part of my life there isn't much that I haven't listened to or played in one way shape or form. In the month of March alone I probably spent well over $3000.00 feeding my acdiction..mainly on new equipment for creating music because performing digs deeper into my soul than anything
....As far as lyrics go, again just about anything with the the exception of those that perpetuate violence, hate, or degradation...Just recently purchased a CD by Rascal Flats with a song titled "My Wish" that moved my soul in a special way...and am secretly entertaining the ideal of purchasing a banjo as soon as I can convince my wife that I really really need one LOL

I really love all types of music. I like to listen to rap in the summer, when I can roll my windows down and bump it or when I'm in the mood to dance. I like 80's when I'm in a silly mood. I like pop songs when I'm feeling happy. I like country when I'm feeling sad and hard rock when I'm angry. I listen to techno when I'm cleaning, jazz when I'm going to sleep, and classical when I'm taking a relaxing bubble bath. So it really all depends. The song that gets me every single time is Skin by Rascal Flatts. It hits very very very very close to home for me.
Sara Beth is scared to death
To hear what the doctor will say
She hasn't been well, since the day that she fell
And the bruise just won't go away
So she sits and she waits with her mother and dad
And flips through an old magazine
Till the nurse with the smile stands in the door
And says will you please come with me
Sara Beth is scared to death
Cause the doctor just told her the news
Between the red cells and white, something's not right
But we're gonna take care of you
Six chances in ten, it won't come back again
With the therapy we're gonna try
It's just been approved, it's the strongest there is
And I think that we caught it in time
And Sara Beth closes her eyes.
And she dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And a soft wind is blowing her hair
Sara Beth is scared to death
As she sits holding her mom
Cause it would be a mistake for someone to take
A bald headed girl to the prom
For just this morning, right here on her pillow
Was the cruelest of any surprise
And she cried when she gathered it all in her hands
The proof that she couldn't deny
And Sara Beth closes her eyes
And she dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And a soft wind is blowing her hair
It's quarter to seven, that boy's at the door
And her daddy ushers him in
And when he takes off his cap
They all start to cry
Cause this morning where his hair had all been
Softly she touches just skin
And they go dancing, around and around
Without any cares
And her very first true love is holding her close
And for a moment she isn't scared

And you only wanted to be loved
Then I'd try to hang on to the past
But you know that nothing, oh no nothing lasts
Nothing lasts .....It's time to
Move on, let the past go
I waited for you here, but you never showed
Although I asked you to let me know
I only felt a cold wind blow
While I tried to hang on to the past
But you know that nothing, oh no nothing lasts
Nothing's in your way
Now you can stand right up and run
Wouldn't even change things
If you took back what you've done
I have tried to hang on to the past
But I couldn't keep my grasp, cause nothing lasts
Nothing lasts
Nothing lasts

I have always loved music and when I was younger many times it was my best friend. Especially the groups I grew up with sung of things I understood, felt, and desired. I like jazz, classical, new age, loathe country and could live without rap and punk. But I love alternative, British classic alternative, and indie rock. The groups I grew up with and still follow today are Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears, A-ha, OMD, Smiths/Morrissey, New Order, The Cure. Also love Ministry, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, NIN, some Marilyn Manson, Ozzy and Metalica.
You can sneer or disappear
Behind a veneer of self-control
But for all of those who don’t fit in
Who follow their instincts and are told they sin
This is a prayer for a different way :flag2:

Amen to that. I'm classically trained as a musician, used to work professionally. I find value in all music. My taste is all over the map. I've always got a list of stuff I'd like to get my hands on. When I really like something I usually hunt down sheet music as well, or plop down at the piano and work it out on my own. I have a friend who is an amazing singer/songwriter and I've been known to call him up and just ask him for his chord progressions straight out.
Kitten-Hush is an awesome cd. One of my favorites as well.
To answer the original question though...what music feeds my soul? John Rutter's Requiem, all 8 movements. It resonated with me deeply the first time I ever heard it. I've performed it multiple times, both as a chorus member and principal soloist. I know it intimately and I love that. It's the music I put in when the noise in my head gets to loud. It never fails to center me. It is breathtaking stuff.

I listen to music almost the entire day. My PC streams electronic music from www.DI.fm 24/7. Usually 'vocal trance' or 'drum and bass'. At work I have a FM radio with headphones and I listen to a station called 'Razor 94.7' "The cutting edge of Rock!" Godsmack, Metallica, Stone Sour, Flyleaf, Slipknot, Lamb of God, 3 Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, and lots lots more. My Truck has a bangin' stereo system and I always have music playing, usualy trance, some rock, 80's music is great fun with friends along. When I am out shopping or anywhere else really, I have my MP3 player, loaded with a mix of all the above mentioned music. I can't stand whiny lovey country music, and I don't like most rap. My favorite club plays great acid jazz music, and my favorite corner coffee shop plays wonderful classical music. I can enjoy almost any music, and couldn't imagine life without it. ^_^ :flag2: :smoke:

Ah man, so much to list...from The Beach Boys to Radiohead to the Pixies to Mogwai back to the Beatles, The Velvet Underground...mostly 60s rock and indie rock for me. My favorite album of all time is a tie between The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" and Brian Wilson's "SMiLE." I write and record music. I've played guitar for years, and I can play bass, working on keys, and working on drums, so I do a bit of everything.

[object Object]This is my first post to any thread on this site, so please be gentle with me.
I am a musical snob. I only listen to Rock n' Roll. Preferably RnR from the Sixties through the late Seventies since thiat was the time I grew up in. My favorites are the usual suspects of that period, The Stones, Zep, The Who, Joplin, The Dead, but also some obscure stuff of that time including Tommy Bolin and a band called Grinderswitch. My all time favorite is Clapton. I just like that bluesey rock guitar. SRV, Boston, Dire Straits beginning to notice a pattern. As the Clapton song says:
"I get off on 57 Chevys
I get off on screamin' guitars"
Not much new stuff I like unless it is a band that has been around for a long time.
I guess I am just old.

Iris by the GooGoo Dolls
And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
When sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
And you bleed just to know you're alive
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
(break and solo)
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

I guess I should breakdown and buy either an MP3 player or an IPod---I have sort of resisted that because the CD is the last vestage remaining of the days when you would go to a record store--get a nice package that you put in your hand (a vinyl 33 rpm LP record).
I would love getting a new album--they were sort a total visceral experience--you could hear the music, look at the artwork and read the liner notes and such that most albums "back in the day" contained.
A good part of that experience was lost when the LP died and then cassette tapes came in for a short time there, followed by CDs.
Reading those little booklets were OK, but not quite the same as holding a gorgeous album in your hand, something that was really a work of art.
Now with downloads--that whole incredible experience is gone--but things do change--the world turns on--so I will be starting to shop for either an MP3 player or IPod very soon and move on to the latest technology.
It will be kind of nice to have thousands of songs stored on something that fits in the palm of my hand or in a shirt or pants pocket.

One of the greatest regrets I have in life that I was not born being able to sing. I admire all those who can. I was in a choir when I was younger, but I was lucky I stood next to my cousin who was an opera and stood next to me. She sang enough for both of us. All I had to do was stand there, smile and accept all the compliments.
I have always admired the way lyrics can make a difference in you life. Word, words of songs in particular mean so much to me. I have listened in times of sorrow and been given comfort. Celebrated in times of joys.
Love Michael Buble, Tony Bennet, Nana Mouskouri, Celtic Women, George Strait, Josh Groban, Roger Whittaker....just to name a few.

The genius and beauty of Mozart, the power of Beethoven an most especially the energy, tranquility and hope of the Pastoral Symphony. And Joe Green who wrote some of the most phenomenal music ever. And lets not forget Gustav Mahler.. Orgasmic! Christina Aguilera, Katie Melua and Coldplay, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, and all forms of traditional folk music, in particular that of the Irish and Scots.
Somewhere previously in threads I printed the words of an anti war song by a guy called Eric Bogle.. read it.. few songs move my soul quite like that. He wote another called Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo. Its not awfully good musically or lyrically, but intensely moving.
Few things move me to tears like music. Without music there is no soul...
