the web site is jayhatefield.net whatever you do dont go there. This is mrs.taz and when I went there the otherday i had continuious pop ups all over the place. this was not good, my comp didnt want to close out of things after all that and I should not have shut comp off. something just told me I wouldnt get it turned back on after shutting it off. the next day went to turn it on and as soon as it got to blue screen where something was supposed to come up for me to enter a password to get rest of the way booted, it started over with booting, it would always get to blue screen and start over. my hubby taz finally got it to the tech screen and then to safe mode where he got to run avg virus scan. it found 80 viruses. taz said there are more there though, he also said my comp has aids. there were atleast 5 viruses that said they were an AID virus. anyway comp said it needed to reboot after scanning with avg that time so it shut down and after that taz couldnt get it back into safe mode. I have no idea when or if my comp will get fixed. we may just have to come up with the money some how to get a new one. not sure where we are gunna come up with that either. talk to yall soon, atleast on this screen name of hubbys.
REMEMBER.....do NOT go to www.jayhatfield.net or will get pop ups that will make ur comp sick.

mrs_t so sorry to hear about your pc - something similar happened to us back in January. Had to go all the way back to the beginning and lost all programs we had loaded since we got the pc four years ago. Luckily we did not lose any files.
Thanks for the heads up on the site though - nice to know that everyone here looks out for everyone else.

wanted to let everyone know if you have something like this happen to your computer dont shut it down because if you do the virus/viruses have a chance to get farther into your system.

have ya tried a low level format of your hard drive? according to the symantec site, the aids viruses are a hoax.
i'm speculating that it's probably one of the other 80 viruses that did the damage....
doing a low level format, and in most cases even a high level format will erase everything on your hd, and leave you with a clean system.
however you will hafta go through and reinstall your os and every program that doesn't install with the os.
i wouldn't recommend trying to clean the virus, because from the sounds of it the bug slipped into your command file, and that's very technical.
not to mention that bugs have a tendency to now get into the system restore folder, so just doing a restore probably won't work either.

when avg did scan in safe mode it found several AID and trojan horse downloader generic. after the scan was done in safe mode it insisted that that reboot had to be done. rebooted or tried to and now hubby cant even get comp to go back into safe mode. I think we are either going to get windows redone or just get me another comp.

yeah, normally having windows redone'll perform the format, it's one of the options that windows provides just for situations like this.
personally, i think that formatting and reinstalling windows would be the fastest an most cost effective way to go vs. buying a new computer. and either way you'll need to start over with anything that's not backed up anyways.
and robin? Linux is great, for computer whizzes an techies lol, but ya really can't get around Microsoft being so user friendly (or at least user friendlier lol) for those of us that don't wanna become techies lol.
not to mention the popular software apps. although i do hear more an more that linux is starting to address these concerns as well, so the next couple of years could be interesting.

:( Sorry to hear about your computer. *HUGS*
If you end up getting another one, which brand do you think it will be? Any particular reason as to why HP doesn't work out for you? *curious*

the next system that mrs.T will get is going to be custom built like mine and as for HP we won't ever get another one of them again cause they are nothing but trouble and when you call for help you don't get it. sorry if it offends anyone but hp computers just suck.

Custom built is always the way to go. I haven't owned a factory built desktop since 2001. Haven't regretted it, since.

Mrs. Taz is so amazing and I have received nothing but care and love and respect here! Thank you!
Our provider finally offered virus protection throught their servers and we can get weekly updates and scans. It has saved many a problem. In addition we purchased an ad-aware software and Zone Alarm software. With all these scans it has taken almost all the problems away especially with my aging desktop. Running these scans seems to take a lot of time better spent but after a near total crash last year, we keep ours scanned daily.
Thanks again Mrs Taz!

Hey, for what it's worth....
I used to do tech support for several major companies. One of the first things you learn as a tech is........everyone's an expert.
Because of this I have learned to keep my mouth shut most of the time, but I would like to offer yall the benefit of my experience if you want it.
This is:
A) Run a hardware firewall. (most newer routers have this built in)
B) Run a software firewall. (Depending on the speed of your processor, you can run the built in firewall in XP AND a third party firewall.
C) Get spyware/adware protection. I prefer SpySweeper or Ad-aware.
D) Have virus protection.
E) Run updates and scans on both C AND D at LEAST once a week.
F) Encrypt your home wireless network (if you have one)
G) Try not to let your computer idle online for hours at a time. You don't have to shut off the machine, but you should turn off the network adapter (using your software) to break the connection to the internet if you intend to leave the machine on all day long. Reconnection is as easy and re-enabling the network adapter on XP.
Regarding bugs.
If you get one bad enough to crash you for extended time Do a DNR (Delete and Reinstall of Operating system)
Load your protection programs FIRST after newly installing OS.
Then load all your other third party programs.
I hope this helps...
