I haven't read the "works" of the Marquis De Sade, but I have heard a few excerpts from his...uh....I think you are accurate in calling it works of horror.

It was a rather interesting time when he wrote that stuff. It was in the 1500's at a period of history when anything sexual was considered only fit for those in power, the wealthy, and oddly enough, the church. A lot of the homes and books owned by this "elite" were heavily decorated with pornographic images that even by today's standards would raise a few eyebrows. Even bibles owned by the powerful and wealthy AND the church were full of tiny depictions of straight, gay, bi, group(you name it) sex acts along the margins of every page!

All of this was kept from the common people until the printing press became more widley used and artists and writers (the Marquis De Sade included) started to make "copies" of their works and to distribute them amontg the commoners.

Needless to say, the commoners were a bit upset to find out that the powerful, the wealthy and the church were on one hand telling them that sex was evil and a great sin, while on the other hand they were pretty much doing the opposite!

The church couldn't exactly say "oops sorry" to the common people and keep any kind of power, so they took the stand that sex was still evil and sinful, but because they were exposed they also had to take a stand against the powers of the time - King Louis and Marie Antoinette.

King Louis the (I forget which number) was a blatant (for lack of a better word) homosexual and Marie Antionette was an extremely active bisexual.

Sex became the weapon of the day and the church used this to have the two of them put to death, rather than risk losing power with the commoners, so once again sex became evil, the church somewhat covered it's embarassment and the commoners were subdued.

I wonder if the Marquis De Sade was really trying to make a politcal statement with writing his porn/horror novels. He was influencial in uncovering the hypocrosy and bullshit that the powers of the time were engaged in.

Can you imagine finding out that the powerful, the wealthy and the church were covering up all this sexual activity and then thinking that what De Sade wrote was describing what was being covered up??

If that was in fact what he was trying to do, he must have laughed himself silly!
