Sounds like fun Tex!! My miniature dachshund is named Frieda and my cat humping Boston Terrier is named Bosco. I also have two cats, Spunky and Toby. Like you Tex, there may not be any kids around for the "empty nest" phase of my life but I am still ruled by animals, as many of you well know, as I am often taken away from chat to take one of the dogs outside! LOL!!!
Hugs,
Kate

I had lots of animals around me when I was very young (from chickens, goats and horses to dogs). My favorites were 2 dogs named Chiisai and Blackie even tho my mom said the goat and I were inseparable. We moved around a lot and I couldn't take them with me so I guess I got to where I didn't want to have to deal with the loss anymore. I never had anymore pets till several years after I got married. I sent my husband to get some handcuffs for me to include in a gift basket while I was at work and instead he came back with a dog. He was suppose to be a pure rhodisian ridgeback and grow to medium sized but Bruce ended up having some St. Bernard mixed in and still thought he was a lap dog at 180lbs. We got him a companion, Chloe who was full blooded shar pei (not the overly wrinkled types) and they were our kids till they passed away a couple of years ago.

Petless at the moment, but my last dog was a border collie/australian shepherd mix named Rimini. She was named for a little beach town in Italy that my ex and I both loved.
I've always had pets. As a kid we had dogs (Misty-collie/german shepherd; Snippy-rat terrier; Bitsy-rat terrier; Copper-coon hound; Buddy-miniature dachsund/chihuahua), a cat (Calico-well, she was a calico, not very inventive I know; Snoop-mutt cat), and geese (Pac-Man, Snow White, Coconut, and Prince Charming).
After I got married, my ex and I got an African Pygmy Hedgehog. We named him Pappageno. We had goldfish, but I don't remember their names. I hated those fish. When we lived in Germany we "shared" our landlords dogs as we all lived in the same house. Topsy was there first, a rottweiler. They got a puppy while we were there, rottweiler/st. bernard mix, named her Topsy as well. Weird. Topsy #1 died about a year after they got Topsy #2. I loved both of those dogs. Then Rimini.
Once I get settled again, I'd love to have a dog, but I think my lifestyle is more condusive to cats. Self-sufficient. We'll see.

I'm without a pet at the moment but I come from a family who has owned dogs for over half my life. In the last couple of years in particular I have seen myself much more likely as a cat co-owner and I'm hoping that within the next year, my wife and I will adopt one.
Time will tell whether the cat tells us where *we* sleep. :-)

Excellent topic !
I have a 9 y/o old dachshund named Ziggy aka Weener ;-) He actually has several names. He is a total food hound if your plate isnt secured your food will be gone in no time at all. This is where Ziggy Piggy comes into play hehe. He prefers larger dogs to play with because he has little man ( another name )syndrom. I honestly think that he thinks he is a great dane or something. He sleeps with me, because he prefers a nice big comforter, such as myself lol He's not the greatest guard dog because he will do all of his barking from underneath the blanket lol I also had an Akita named Bonnie who was weeners best friend , but I put her down last summer. ( she was almost 13 ) ;-( Weener would clean her , inside her mouth , inside her ears, and when she was really sick and had sores on her bum , weener would clean them too. I never saw 2 dogs that loved eachother more. I think he knew she was sick long before I did. The good Lord might not bless me with actual children but he couldnt have paired me up better with the 4 legged kids ive had in my life :)

Pets!
I have a cat named Johan. It's a typical dutch name, they named him that way in the pound we got him from and just didn't change it since he was used to it already.
I also have a rat named Meep. A lot of people dislike rats, until they see a pet rat. Possibly the cutest animal ever. Very hygenic too, contrary to popular belief. ._.

This a cool idea....good job Tex!
Ok, Flounder and I have several pets also. Our dog which appeared in our yard on Flounder's birthday is a mix of we don't really know what...we've been told some boxer/lab/shepherd. She's 75 pounds and her name is "Margaret Ann" aka Maggie.
3 house cats. Our first one has a strange name but it's all due to her being the largest of the batch. She was down right huge and we thought she was a he so we named her Moose, come to find out she was a she and we changed it to "Moosetta Lynn" aka Moosie
The other 2 are sister and brother. "Cassie Renae" aka Cassie and "Bo" aka Bo Bo.
Speaking of animals...my mom and dad's house cat of 16 yrs. died on friday. "Mickey" will be missed!

shrek, aka the ginger ninja, aka shrekem pink bits.. a runt sized fully grow ginger male...who thinks that licking his ass every half hour is a good idea hence the pink bits name... and when you pat him, he tried to stand on his head and roll around, hence the name the ginger ninja

I absolutely LOVE animals!! I have always had so many pets growing up, from cows and snakes to cats and bunnies. But right now since we are living in an apartment *grumble* we have two cats. One Kitty, I have had since I was 4 (hence the name, I couldn't decide) and another we recently adopted Chloe, we usually call her Bear though because when she plays she will rear up on her hind legs, wave her paws in the air and then pounce. :)

it is this bunch that keeps me level; three chihuahuas, taco and tostada, who begat taquito; then two kitties that rule the roost, the orange tabby name persimmon; a manic that always can prove that there is always a much more difficult means to an end, then the fluffy persian, smoke; she who disciplines one and all with the velvet paw, and a queenly demeanor that quite clearly shows her utter disgust with the species called dog.

I have 2 cats. Sass and Smoky Jo. A black lab, Abby, who is 9 and a yellow lad, Ginger, who is 10. Ginger is really having problems right now. She stopped using her back legs and we are trying to get some kind of an answer. If you believe in prayer, please say one for her. She is so gentle and such a great spirit.

We have a black Cocker Spaniel appropiately named Blackie, although I wanted to call him Ace of Spades. What can I say, I'm a poker and 21 player. Blackie is 13. We also have a cat, an American Mixed breed, named Connie. She adopted us, and we had originally called her Conrad because we thought she was a he. She is about 4 and was named after Conrad Hilton, one of my business idols. - Dave

Hubby and I have 1 pet (unless ya want to count our teenage son Jeremy too) LOL
We have a wolf-dog named Pearl. She is almost 5 now and is white with very faint gold agouti markings that only show up after she's had a bath. She is the MOST LOVABLE dog I've ever had, other than one little mutt we named "Punkin' " (cause she was just a little ball of orange fuzz when she was abandoned by our farm) and I've had many dogs as pets ever since I was a child on the farm my parents had.
When we got married tho I had 6 cats, my old gold tabby Goldie (named cause of his color) and 5 kittens my children and I had found abandoned about a mile from our home (not named except for Mittens who had and extra toe on each front paw and had "mittens on all 4, and Midnight - all black except for a white spot on his throat - my younger daughter kept him) and my son had a dog - Ashley. We took Ashley back to the pet adoption center where we had gotten her and she was adopted out the next day (or so the center told us). Hubby and his son also had a dog that he was able to find a good home for.
We got rid of all the cats because of hubby's allergies. My old tom we had to put down as he was just too old to adapt to a new home. I still miss him. My older daughter and her hubby tried to take him but he just wouldn't eat or anything even tho he loved them both. The kittens we found other homes for, all but 1 on farms.

I've got a dog named Clancy and a cat named Lulu. When I was younger I went through a string of hamsters, mice, rats, guinea pigs, and fish - nearly all were named after dictators. Hopefuly when I move into my new apartment I'll be able to find a sweet tempered black cat who I can name Jeffry. Until then, I have a roommate! lol

I've had small furry mammals around me all my life. And a few not so mammalian :)
I've had dogs and cats, cockatiels, a Senegal parrot, two land crabs, a couple turtles, mice, hamsters, gerbils a pet rat and Charlotte, my tarantula.
Currently we only live with two animals [teenage sons not withstanding ]
We have a wonderful little 8 year old Pomeranian we got from a rescue. His name is Brenner and he is much beloved. It's obvious he's been through a great deal in his life.
Then there is my love, my delight; Chela, my Umbrella Cockatoo. This type of companion is not for everyone. He requires a minimum of 3 hours a day of direct attention. Birds can go insane from being isolated, you know. He also requires wooden toys to shred to simulate his wild nature. Birds are not domesticated animals. Many companion parrots are only 2-3 generations away from their wild ancestors. I generally spend about $100 on toys for him each month.
Notice I call him a companion, not a pet. Studies by Irene Pepperburg, the foremost researcher in avian studies, has placed his species' mental capacity at about the level of a 3 year old child. So he's very smart and has a can opener on his face. Which means when he has a temper tantrum, someone or something is likely to get hurt.
Chela also requires special housing. He has a stainless steel cage as big as an average sized closet that he sleeps in and spends time in when he's not out with us. He also has a large wooden perch with branches to climb on and swing from if he wants to.
He is loud, he is messy, he is demanding and for 2-3 months every year he gets territorial during breeding season. BUT he is the only other creature on the planet tht says "I love you". And that, my friends, makes it all worth while.
What's a little scary to me is that he may very well outlive me. His lifespan is between 40 and 60 years. Because of that, I will have to make provisions for him in my will. Since my sons will most likely not want to deal with all the mess, etc, I will have to find a good rescue for him to go to when I die.
LOL! And now you know more than you wanted to about birds

I've had animals almost all my life, from the time I was born. Here is the story of my most recent pets.
I had two cats. Phoebe was the name of the female. Oreo was the name of the male. In the mornings, waking up, Phoebe was often found sleeping on someones head. Oreo was a very affectionate cat. He kissed on the mouth and loved to nuzzle.
Before the cats, I had a Great Dane, Harley. He came from a Great Dane Rescue. (Ran by wife of Burt Ward, Robin from the old Batman series) Right away, he picked me out to be his person and stuck to me like glue. He slept with me. Thank goodness I had a queen bed. He didn't know he was too big to be in my lap, but he didn't know that. He always tried to get as close to that as he can. When he couldn't, he was at least in every room (except bathroom) with me at all times. Followed me everywhere. He was like this untill the day he passed away.

When we were first married, oh so many years ago, we had a Lhasa Apso named Maxamillion Andrew Chazar but we called him Bische. When our daughter was born, he went to live with my aunt. He was so protective of the baby, that would let NO ONE come near her.
Currently we have one pet we call our own. Kendall, our daughter has a guinea pig named Honey Bun. At first I detested the thoughts on a big white rodent in our home. But, well she has grown on us. She live in a mansion of a cage in Kendall's room and Santa is bringing her a new bed for lounging in the family room and a hammock type swing for her cage.
We also have another pet, although not legally ours. Hershey, a huge chocolate lab that is my brother and his family's who live across the street from us. We should just adopt him as he spends more time with us that at his legal residence. Right now, as I write he is lying at the side of my bed, snoring away.
That is our family.

This is a cool thread
I have 4 cats that are mine.
1. June bug she is a calico and a rescue that when i got her had to force feed her for a month before she came around
2. Anikan Skywalker, aka Ani, she is black, and as evil as female cats come my son actually named her. Our old babysitter brought her to us.
3. and 4. are brothers one is mostly black with a little white and the other is mostly white with a little black. The black one is General Grevious and the white one is Yoda. Again the boys named the cats. The funny part is that my husband hates the cats but he treats them better than i would. He is always giving them tuna and wet cat food and making sure they all come in at night. And I am the crazy one.
Now we have neighborhood cats that come and play that of course i have named. We have what looks like a persion/siemies mix named Pretty Boy. A mostly black cat that we all hate named James. Then the neighbors cat that likes my food better named Figiro who is dark gray.
That rounds out my zoo.

Well, I've mostly had cats and birds my whole life. The birds were Spike and Jones, and to anyone who puts the names together and sees Spike Jones, no that's not why they were named that. It was a pure coincidence. Jones was originally our bird and we had him for about a year before we got Spike from my uncle...
As for cats I'll go in chronological order, our first cat was named Jesus, she was a good little black kitty. Then we had Freckle, she was a calico. Then there was my cat Velcro, a rather odd colored cat, she was a striped calico tabby. I called her Velcro because when she was about a two weeks old if you held her in your hand and then slowly turned it upside down she'd hold on, she could hold on completely upside down for about 5 minutes before she finally dropped, and only 2 weeks old too. Then there's my older brother's cat named Lollipop. He's called that because shortly after he was born there was a dog owned by the family that owned him that would just walk up and start licking him for several minutes at a time.

My last pet was a beautiful, sweet Siberia-husky/coyote mix. She was a shelter dog, and my the time we got her she had lost a litter of pups, been shot in the face, run over by a ca, and a previous owner had tried to drown her. All by the time she was 3.
Which may be why somewhere along the way she had been named "Patience."
I cried when I finally had to have her put her down.

Well, I grew up on a farm and so we had a ton of animals, and named every single one. My favorite cats were the head Male, Smoky Joe Jr., a my long haired gray cat named Josephine. My favorite horse's name was Sugar and my favorite dog's name was Ashley. My mom also had a Shetland Sheepdog kennel so we had so many pets, even named the cows we had(ow Cutie I'm so sorry to have eaten you!). But one thing always held true, we had and have so much respect for dogs that we believe they should never be named anything other than human names.
Now I have 2 cats at my now ex's house named Pepper and Molly (youngest and oldest orphan in "Annie") and I have a huge red-eared slider turtle my kids named Crush (yes, they loved Finding Nemo).
If I have get a few bucks ahead of myself I'm getting a dog, I missing having a 4 legged furry friend around.
Luv and kisses,

What a timely thread to come back. My 12 year old daughter and I are off to Rochester, New York this weekend to pick up her new Lhasapoo puppy named Oliver Dawson. It is a surprise for her and we are looking forward to the new addition to the family.

Spike was named after the vampire in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Ollie was named after Oliver Hardy from Laurel & Hardy, & Tinker was named because he`s into everything!!
