I started thinking about this with the word association thread. We've all seen compelling movies, but how about those that managed to get through your defenses and really hit you where you lived? The ones you'll never forget? I have a few.

The one I'm thinking of is What Dreams May Come, with a brilliant dramatical performance by the late, beloved Robin Williams. We think of him as a comedian, but he was also a serious actor. This movie explores Life, Death, Heaven and Hell in a way that is both terrifying and ultimately uplifting. For those of us who have not endured clinical depression, it'll have you on the edge of your seat. For those of us who have, it has the capacity to hit us right where we live and pull us inside out - but we may be glad it did as Williams manages both to affirm the pain we recognize as our own, and to offer us a little compassionate hope.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is a dark psychological thriller. More than one scene had the whites of my eyes showing. Very, very well produced and acted with a heavy hitter cast - Matt Damon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Damon) as Tom Ripley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Ripley), Jude Law (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jude_Law) as Dickie Greenleaf, Gwyneth Paltrow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwyneth_Paltrow) as Marge Sherwood and Cate Blanchett (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cate_Blanchett) as Meredith Logue.

Maybe it should, but it didn't... and besides... none of the greatest OR most powerful movies of all time has been mentioned in this forum.. 2 are quite powerful and also excellent films and another 3 watchable... no more. Most mentioned are tosh.... several of the most powerful films ever made were nasty evil productions such as Triumph of the Will... and Birth of a Nation was pretty nasty. My view... no 1 has 2 agree...we all c the world differently.

Powerful doesn't always mean good, tho I do have a soft spot for Battleship Potemkin... now there is a powerful and great movie.. but the most powerful (or greatest?) I doubt it.. just very enjoyable silent film, but then Fran is a socialist.. it fits 'er view of the world and so she would say that wouldn't she?

Also Dr Zhivago and not only cos I grew up in luff wiv Julie Christie having met her 1ce wen I was a lickle gel living in London... a memory wich never fades... the book btw is also a wonderful read... most powerful and greatest? Nope.. but an excellent film all the same...

...and me most fave film of the last few years.. French and wonderful... Blue is the Warmest Colour.. it has a power of its own but I wouldn't call it a powerful film.... just wonderfully beautiful with a tale 2 tell....
Sorry! Should have read the three GREATEST movies of all time!
