Well, it is really their own choice as how they identify themselves. Our choice lies in how we choose to perceive them. Similar to you, I feel maybe befuddled over their actions and choice for a small duration. Then, I realize they're human males on a tiny speck of a planet in a vast set of cosmoses. Realize too, their choices are not mine. I have no control over what anyone chooses except myself.

These realized, I realize too I am not my emotions. Befuddled is a visitor only. That I can control. So I return to being not really too concerned over what someone else calls themselves. That will happen as long as there are people. Not sure anyone can do much to control that into abomination. This follows what I have seemed to know. Not read the work, but just knew the subject matter. It is akin to having just known how to set up basic Apache web servers about five years prior to them being actual Apache web servers. Prior to that they were merely http servers and if recalled correctly CERN was in the lead in how they were standardized and coded up, configured.

I did not attend any university yet knew of these servers and how to configure them and make them work, understood them. Could not tell you I knew, but I knew. Also knew/know there was a lot I did not know / still don't know. I'm happy to not know everything.
