In the store a bit ago my friend was shocked to have a Very good looking young man that I know approach me, greet me with a warm hug and big kiss. I introduced her to him and she just stared when he said, "I need to come see you soon. I'm needin' some me some Mama lovin'" I laughed and told him 'Any time, Darlin. You just let me know When"

After he kissed me again and ran off she stared at me, and exclaims, "WTF? Why do these men love you so much? I mean, no offence, but look at him! And look at you. I dont get it!"
All I could do is laugh at her as she looked flustered.

I have battled weight issues my entire life and I would have given anything to have your attitude and sense of self-confidence. I was always my own worst enemy and whenever I would get down on my self, my "sexual" self would also suffer. Due to health issues I had no choice but to deal with the weight and I am happy to say that I am finally at a point where I am truly happy with myself, but it's taken a lot of work to get here.

This is sort of off topic, but I just had to pipe-in......

I think the OP meant to refer to "back-handed compliments" and not "left-handed compliments". I trust this was her intention and I just wanted to point that out to everybody reading this thread, so that others don't make the same mistake.

Left-handed people have been subjected to a lot of discimination and prejudice in many societies around the world. I myself have older relatives who were quite literally beaten into writing/catching with their right hands; because of this prejudice, which is very, very deep; but taken for granted (and sometimes unfortunately perpetuated by people who don't know any better).

This all stems from very old beliefs, and it is firmly rooted in many western languages.

In French, right is "droit" and left is "gauche"; but these words also have other meanings that draw the distinction. "Le droit" also means "the right" (not 'on the right side', but literally, 'right' as in 'human rights'). "Le droit" can also mean "the law". On the other hand, "gauche" also means improper/unseemly or crude.

In Italian, the word for 'left' is "sinistro", which also means "sinister", a conotation which harkens back to the old days when left-handed people were thought to be the devil's helpers.

Even in English, "right" means "correct", "upstanding", "justified", and it also has that 'human rights' connotation. OTOH, "left" could mean 'remaindered', as in "left over". In common parlance, "Left" also refers to a supposedly backward political inclination, making "The Left" somewhat of a 'third rail' issue (touch it and you'll get zapped).

Historically, many so-called "witches" were burned at the stake; bought there by accusations which often included them being left-handed.


So therefore, please everybody kindly remember that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a "left-handed compliment", in much the same way that say, a left-handed handjob can be A-OK!


A "back-handed compliment", OTOH, is a manifestation of passive/aggressiveness and likely envy/jealousy; and you should never take something like that to heart, because it says much more about the person saying it than the person hearing it.

RE: Wikipedia, I think that tens of millions of people use Wikipedia every day to learn something new or share new insights. This includes many professionals and others in responsible positions who are trying to understand things they don't already know. It's called learning.

Yes, I know that it is possible for a 'bad actor' to create a BS Wiki entry, which is why there's much more to using Wikipedia than simply swallowing the wiki entry.

IMO, and to the credit of the millions of people around the world who use Wikipedia every day (not all of whom are idiots... ahem!); the best thing about Wikipedia is that you can go to the bottom of a (proper!) Wikipage and find a section-full of "References". Many of the references also include hyperlinks, and you can hover your mouse over them and see where they link-to.

So, not only can one read (or 'swallow') what is written in the Wiki; but you can also refer to the References and see who is backing-up those facts/details/histories and other information, in order to arrive at a better understanding of the issue you are researching. In my experience, Wikipedia is an excellent resource precisely because it doesn't stop there. (duh!)

It is the weight of this body of work, along with other references that include University research papers, or theses, and other articles in the press; that gives a Wikipage it's 'heft', such that it is (considering that Wikipedia was never meant to be a "source-document"....... duh!).

But, that intellectual legitimacy is not what I was refering to when I made that first post I made in this thread. Rather, I was writing from my own personal experience and the experiences as relayed to me by people I know personally, including blood relatives of mine. To the best of my knowledge, none of the people I actually know have writen or published about their personal experiences of discrimination, prejudice and abuse for being left-handed, but that doesn't diminish the veracity of their life experience. I can accept what they've told me as their truth, because I'm not an asshole.


Now, please, let's just stick to the topic of "Back-handed Compliments", because despite what you've written, I'm sure you're probably a very good reader!
