Quebec had a provincial election on Tuesday. As suspected Parti Quebecois won the election. They are a minority government and that is good. Hopefully, they are. Pauline Marois is the first woman Premier in Quebec. She has been raising the sovernist /separatist issues. The PQ has been on the path of indedendence for decades. The Liberals were accused of corrution and after ten years were defeated.

It will be interesting times in Canada. Supposedly, the conditions are different from the last two separatist referendums.

Sadly, and maybe horrifically, during Marois winner's speach, just as she was about to start talking about her plans for demands, a man shot and killed another man. He wounded a second person.

There is the possibility (probably) that he opposed Marois. “Les anglais se réveillent,” he yelled as he was being led away. “The English are waking up.” He appeared as though he would have said more when an officer pulled the suspect’s balaclava back over his mouth and put him in the police vehicle. A gas gerry can was found at the back door of the building and it is possible that he may have been trying to set it on fire. (or maybe not?)

The police can not say whether Marois was his target or not. The shooting was done outside of the buiding though.

What do other Canucks think of these turn of events? Election of PQ and this shooting?

Sorry, not a Canuck but I do have an opinion. I saw this on the world news and read it on stuff.co.nz and now again with your story and one thing stand out to me... Why would he yell "The English are waking up" in French? There are disturbed individuals in every country who will take things to an extreme and my heart goes out to the family of the man killed and to the wounded as well as the people there who were traumatized by the event. Was it just a politicial stunt or is there more to it? I'm sure we'll know more in the coming days.

"Why would he yell "The English are waking up" in French?"

He is reportedly an anglo bilingual man. He was speaking in French (reportedly English Canadian accent) imo because he is telling the PQ that the English in Quebec will resist Marois plans to separate from Canada. Since he was in a bathrobe, I'd guess that he reacted after seeing the results of the election. He tried to set the back door of the building on fire. He wanted panic and heaven knows what else.

"Was it just a politicial stunt or is there more to it?"

Clearly a political gesture. Was there more to it? He hopefully is a mentally ill person with no one else supporting him. However, in the 1970 it was the Separatists who kidnapped and killed a Quebec cabinet minister and a British consulate person. Pierre La Porte( Quebec cabinent minister was killed and the British consulate released. There were violent acts of blowing up Canadian mailboxes. That was Canada's terrorist era. Hopefully, we do not get a reverse where Anglo Quebecois become violent. I somehow doubt that but then who knows at this point.
