This seems interesting and will get a few comments I would think:

lol the trouble with the study is it uses the vid and it doesn't indicate what the person is attracted to.... the person, the sexual act or the genitalia.... and the reason for that is a attraction to a sexual act, is not a interest in a person..... they should have tried same sex and opposite sex vids as well, as that could have given them more of a area to work with..... as some people are attracted to people sexually, some are just attracted to the genitalia and some to the person by way of other qualities......
that is why using the test to see if a person is bisexual, would create flaws in the study

however that being said, the eyes in many people can be a dead giveaway of interest, desire and attraction if a person knows what to look for ( body language ) so there are some pretty good grounds for the validity of the study in that its looking at a aspect of people that can be more accurate in regards to interest or desire....

An interesting fact reported is that pupil dilation happened with self indentified hetero women whether the image was a man or a woman masturbating. The theory presented is debatable and it might be interesting to hear other's opinions. It seems a bit far fetched but? I suspect that it was not actually in the study but the reporter or ?

"One theory is that because women have been at risk of being raped throughout history, they evolved to respond with lubrication to any sexual stimulus, no matter how unappealing. This idea holds that women who did so were less likely to experience trauma or infection after sexual assault, making it more likely that they would survive to pass on their genes."

"the trouble with the study is .......................that is why using the test to see if a person is bisexual would create flaws in the study."

Is this poster 2's opinion?
It reads to me as if from an "expert" position?

Imo, the trouble with the above statements in post 2 is that it is too complex for a peer reviewed research study. There are too many variables being introduced.

Pupil dilation has been proven as co related to emotion in many previous studies as it is an autonomic response(natural biological response). In this study it is reported that the co relation between sexual arousal from an erotic image was measured by pupil dilation. The dilation of pupils matched self reported sexual arousal by the subjects. A control factor was "The videos were all matched for brightness so that differences in light wouldn't skew the results."

The report of the study does not report whether genitals or facial features were displayed but it does report that the video imagery was masturbating men or women as opposed to non sexual stimulus in landscape (another control factor to determine that pupils were functioning and no emotional/sexual arousal from this image). Poster 2 is speculating what was screened unless he viewed the videos himself.

To include two people having sex would be a different study with other control factors needed. Research is done by examining controlled factors. The more variables introduced decreases the validity of the study. There would have to be a co relation to other studies examining sexual orientation and physiological response such as pupil dilation or penis arousal. I do not recall any previous studies but then? Imo, the validity of such a study is questionable as to whether such a study should be done. But hell..go for it. Good luck on getting a grant. ;)

Another study involving pupil dilation but congitive rather than sexual orientation was being studied.

Abstract
The study presented here investigated the effects of emotional valence on the memory for words by assessing both memory performance and pupillary responses during a recognition memory task. Participants had to make speeded judgments on whether a word presented in the test phase of the experiment had already been presented (“old”) or not (“new”). An emotion-induced recognition bias was observed: Words with emotional content not only produced a higher amount of hits, but also elicited more false alarms than neutral words. Further, we found a distinct pupil old/new effect characterized as an elevated pupillary response to hits as opposed to correct rejections. Interestingly, this pupil old/new effect was clearly diminished for emotional words. We therefore argue that the pupil old/new effect is not only able to mirror memory retrieval processes, but also reflects modulation by an emotion-induced recognition bias.

Yeah. I'd be interested to see how this test would work with me. I find very few men sexually attractive, yet I'm pretty much exclusively interested in men sexually. I can't imagine my eyes would react sexually to most guys I see on a given day.

Hmm, I guess I watch too much sci-fi - All I can imagine is a bunch of retina scanners constantly scanning the crowd in an airport and showing me a targeted holographic ad of a bunch of half-naked Abercrombie and Fitch boys roughhousing on the beach in the middle of a public airport.

there is a basic self test that you can use, so it can give you a rough idea about what others can notice in your face when you are sexually aroused....

you need a few pics, even ones that you have printed out on a printer or from a mag.....and you need a mirror.....
look at the pics, just one at a time for about 20 seconds then look at the mirror.... and you may notice a change in your pupils.......

the other way is a hi def cam, even a good webcam can do the job..... you focus it on your eyes / face while watching random porn.... and you may be able to see the changes to your pupils / face as you react to some of the porn......

its a generic test and works on the same principal as reading body language, something bar staff, counselors, therapists, cops etc, all use as a unspoken tool, to tell things about a persons state and frame of mind and mind lol
