Plus, my upbringing was, how do you say, dysfunctional. Parents always felt that there was something wrong with me (It was never clear what they thought it was), and they kept sending me to therapy. After years in therapy of my own volition, I found out that I'm perfectly okay as I am. My major issue is that I learned from my parents useless and sometimes non-productive ways to deal with things. I've been working very hard for a long time to replace those with more positive ways of dealing with various things.

One of the non-productive things that they taught me was how to deal with sex. Not sexuality, per se. Just the issue of sex. So I kind of hid it away and felt like it was something to be ashamed of. I probably avoided a lot of opportunities for meaningful relationships both with women and men, because I was afraid that sex might come into it one way or another. I had a number of women who were probably interested in me, but I pushed them away. I also had a few men come out of the closet to me, and I handled those badly.

But the truth of the matter is, I should have at least explored both of those potential kinds of relationships, and should have been at least open to them.

I've recently had a final and serious falling out with parents and the family. And I'm thinking, IT'S FINALLY ABOUT TIME! They've held me back for too long - and to be honest, I've held myself back because I thought that I should work things out with them and be the son that they think that I should be.

Spending so much time on trying to fix something that can't be fixed meant that I missed out on all sorts of opportunities to be with people. I've let me fear (mostly instilled by them, and hung onto by myself) stand in the way.

I'm thinking that with the final break between me and my family, it's time for me to start learning to live life. One area that I need to come to grips with is sex. Not my sexuality, as I said above, just the issue of sex. I think that I'm fairly comfortable with my sexuality. There was a short test somewhere that asked about my sexual orientation. I think that iIsaid that I was heterosexual with an occasional thought or attraction toward men.

Personally, I hate labels. Years ago, I learned from a therapist that sexuality exists along a continuum. In other words, no one is 100% straight or 100% gay. We're all somewhere in between those labels. It's only society and, to be honest our own search for meaning in our lives that make us choose one or the other, like it's a true or false test. The reality is that its more like an essay question, where we each answer what each of us uniquely are. Sort of like what I'm doing right now.

So anyway, that's my story so far. I have a lot of unanswered questions, ranging from the emotional and relationship parts of sex, all the way to what do we do with the physical equipment that the universe has assigned to us.

My bottom line thinking and (sort of) feeling is that sex should be okay, and it's nothing to feel bad about. We should enjoy it, with whomever floats our boat. If we enjoy it with both genders, that's okay. If we enjoy it a certain percentage of the time with one gender, and a certain percentage of the time with another gender, that's okay too. If we enjoy it with both genders at the same time, that's also okay. If we enjoy it in a big room with a lot of folks all enjoying it together, then that's still okay.

But we should feel comfortable with it. Someone a long time ago decreed that sex should be an uncomfortable subject, and then passed that way of thinking on down the line. All I can say is I hope that person has their own special hell all to themselves.

What's most important though is that with sex, we need most of all to respect our partners, both potential and actual. All that I really want in life is respect and to feel safe.

And that's about it...for now.
