This is a bit of a non-partisan issue---last week I had heard a segment on NPR about the lack of parades for the troops who have come home to the states with the official end of the war in Iraq.

In the story----they talked that the city of New York was already making preparations for such a parade should the NY Giants win the Superbowl---at the press conference with NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg----a reporter asked him if there were any plans to have such a parade for our troops that came home from Iraq and he replied in a sort of almost pissed off manner about the question that "NO--we don't plan to have any such parade!" Bloomberg went on to say something to the effect that as long as we still have troops in Afghanistan, it would not "be appropriate to have one for the Iraq War troops."

I see that today--they are going to have a ticker tape parade to honor the team members of the NY Giants for having won a game and still---no parade for our troops is being planned in NYC--I think that this is pretty sad!!!

Well--the story on NPR went to on to say that several groups of Iraqi vets and those who are interested are pushing for such parades to take place in some of our major cities like New York, Chicago, etc.

So far, only St. Louis, MO has planned such an event: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=145948863

I would just suggest--that if you live in the US---join the effort to build support for such parades taking place in cities all over the nation---I don't have a problem with a parade for a sports team---but I really think we need to honor in some way other than lip service---our troops for having undergone years of multiple deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan, putting themselves in harm's way with many not coming back alive or having suffered physical or mental injury---it is really a sad thing too that relative to our population---so few of us really either do serve in the military or have served---those that have done so in this case need to be thanked and honored for their service in having gone over to these places fighting for our protection and freedom!!

It does seem that much lip service is given by the politicians and such about how much they honor those of us who have or do serve--but in so many ways---vets often get screwed out of the things that they are promised beginning with those who served in the Revolutionary War, to the vets of WWI and Vietnam---about the only war vets this nation has "done right by" were those who served in the Civil War and WWII, but for most of the rest of our armed conflicts---once it was all said and done--the vets at the very least got forgotten if not downright screwed!!!

Do check out that final link if ya don't do anything else---it is a blog on the Iraqi Afghanistan Veterans of America about this issue---thanks!!!
