Tiny ND town bans oil workers' 'man camps'
-------------------------------------------

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Concerned that a Colorado company appeared to be turning an old school building in the tiny town of Almont, ND, into dormitory-style housing for oil workers, city officials called a rare special meeting and banned such so-called man camps.

The ordinance passed Monday in Almont, ND — a town of about 100 people, 35 miles southwest of Bismarck, ND.

Who is right? Is this sexual discrimination? Working men can't go to work & live in tenant workers' dorm? Give this the laughs it deserves!

No, I don't think it's sexual discrimination. Reading the article they clearly outline the issues with an all male group of oil workers in one building. The town has a very small police force and it seems clear if these men wanted to move town with their families or live singly in apartments and boarder rooms they would be welcomed with open arms. They just don't want the problems that are sure to arise with a large group of men in a demanding job who domicile together.

It seems the oil company is trying to only invest as little money as possible for housing for their workers when they could easily buy some other real estate and spread the men out in the town.

So while it could be occupational discrimination....it's not sexual discrimination.

Well..... some wags on here might fancy that the "Town of Almont Fiftymen" & their wives are having their own bi- bi swing club parties, and they just didn't want interlopers or "join in men" to move into town, from the oilworkers' ranks. (male or female?)

It certainly has the "small town attitude" of wanting to be left alone to their own sexuality, (whatever it be)..... The Village of Peyton Place revisited??

Fred, I'm sorry, but you seem to have missed the point of my post and the gist of the article you posted. It's not about sexuality at all.

Our little town had a man camp in the late 1980's and it was a good place to find the local girls offer their services. Going from one trailer to another, they made good money at the expense of their dignity. But with the climate of why the workers were there and other factors, a riot broke out and the state patrol had to come up and herd the lawbreakers into jail, only after watching the man camp burn to the ground and its inhabitants get beat up. The North Dakota situation is not much different than when the Chinese came over to find work and had to stay in thread bare tents while working long days to build our national railroads. Things never change!
