The World's First Openly Gay Head of State?

David Norris has now garnered sufficient nominations to stand for the Presidency of the Republic of Ireland and does have a real chance of winning since polls (never entirely reliable) show him in front of the other two main candidates, Martin McGuiness and Dana Scanlon (of Eurovision Song Contest fame)... whether he does win remains to be seen but even although the job is largely ceremonial, the very fact that he has a real chance of doing so shows what a long way Ireland has come in my lifetime.. it remains less advanced than my own country and still not nearly so progressive but his candidature is a victory in its own way for lgbt people and can only further their cause no matter the result...

When you think of Ireland in the early, even mid, 1990s it is amazing.

Iceland might argue they've scored this trophy though with a lesbian PM.

I should have been a tadge more careful and said if elected he will be the worlds first elected openly gay head of state..

England had Edward II and arguably James II (also VI of Scotland) although they both married and had children. Everyone knew Edward to be gay and it was an open secret although James may have actually been been a bona fide bisexual but whether gay or bisexual, it is debatable whether his status was open.. The wisest fool in Christendom even travelled to Denmark to pick up his bride and is known to have been a bit of a romantic old soul. Evidence of Jamie Saxt being a raunchy old gay guy is in fact circumstantial... It is claimed that George III (he who lost the colonies) was gay and it was openly known among the nobs of the time.. whether that constitutes openly is a good question since most peeps were not nobs and indeed anything but... There are also claims that William III was gay but that too was not common knowledge among the masses..

Of other countries I cant say too much but some of the Roman Emperors were a raunchy old lot who seemed to like their own gender (Hadrian for instance)and ancient Greece same sex relationships between men were the in thing and between men and women primarily for breeding..

The PM isnt head of state but head of government like here, but that too is a terrific thing for the likes of us... but considering Ireland was forced by European law to legalise homosexuality I think what is happening does show just how far the country has moved in 20 years...:)
