I did find what I think the OP was talking about--if you click on the link on the page that comes up and read several pages in on what comes up--there is an article on the ways that researchers have found all sorts of animals masturbate.

I do have to say---I have been known to masturbate "in the wild" more than a few times myself. I love to find places "in the great outdoors" to self-pleasure myself---its even better if you can have someone with you to do that and more.
