Generally speaking JAVA is safe, you can download the latest commercial version from here if you have windows:
http://www.java.com
The de-facto implementation used to be manufactured by Sun Microsystems and has now been bought out by Oracle, a very reputable international corporation that has been selling database software since the 70's.
The idea behind JAVA is that you can write one program (like the chat program) and run it across many different vendor's types of equipment without having to change the program to make it work.
The program is written for the JAVA engine and each vendor (Microsoft, Apple, Sony, etc) writes a JAVA engine that implements the program/language features on their specific equipment (MS Windows, Mac OSX, Blu-Ray Player, etc.).
Historically there have been JAVA exploits discovered in the engines written by specific vendors but there are also, many, many reputable applications written with it so generally it is safe.
