I predicted the ruling but was hoping like hell for a more dissenting opinion.
Now the idiots have promised to quadruple their protests at funerals.

For a country loaded with guns and people getting all shot up, I'm shocked they haven't been shot.
WE NEED MORE GUNS.

That is revolting!! They have a constitutional right to inflict emotional warfare on the very soldiers who give their lives to protect their rights? That is so fucked up. And yet two consenting, same sex adults do not have the right to celebrate their love infront of their church and community. Absolutely stupid.
Man am I glad Canada wouldn't even let them in the country (for their own safety, cause our government wouldn't guaranty their safety, and thousands were waiting to pummel them.) Bastards!!!

Unfortunately, Mikey, what I have always said about the First Amendment being a double edged sword rings true with this decision. Because the very right that gave a lesbian the right to go to prom in a tux is the same that allows them to spew their hatred.
We have to take the bad to have the good or even deeper, we have to have the bad to recognize and appreciate the good.

This one got beat to death at my guitar forum- but I am happy to report that we seem to be growing up as a people and realizing that its not ok to beat people up for who they are. Not once, in 5 pages equalling 80 some posts was anything derogatory mentioned about gays, Bi-s or people in general. (unless, of course, you belong to WBC- they took a lashing and a half. I also bore witness last summer to something that warmed my heart- the WBC said they were going to picket a Marine Sergeants funeral and the area went berserk to block their protests. Some 3000+ showed up and WBC couldnt get within a mile of the funeral. What an awesome sight.;)

This. Man, the First Amendment is a bitch, but I wouldn't want to live without it.

Bi-Curious Doogie, it makes me glad to see that in the USA the people can set their differences aside and take a stand against nutcases like this. The WBC is a cult, just plain and simple. I know that there are several organizations like that one in Spain, but I doubt any of them would have the disrespect of interrupting the funeral of anybody. Oh, and if they did, I would recommend them to watch where they parked their cars. Because they can come back to where their mode of transportation was and see their windows smashed, tires slashed and a nice note of "Peace be with you, brothers!" stuck in the front seat. Or maybe they wouldn´t find their car at all. Jesus didn´t need it, why should they? (Please, note that I am not saying that Jesus Christ is as bad as they are. I respect him and I consider him one of the most awesome people to ever walk the face of Earth, but I never will agree with someone who interpretes the holy writings for spreading hate and opression...).
Really, some people...

These people piss me off. But they get their first amendment rights even if it is hard to swallow. However, they are beginning to get what they deserve at a grass roots level.
They've picketed funerals in my area at least twice with very little success. Anti-Westboro church protesters show up and line the streets, making it difficult if not impossible for them to even get close to the funeral/whatever that they are protesting. There's a motorcycle club that shows up against them here. You haven't seen anything until you've seen a motorcycle club and PFLAAG folks and regular red-necked conservatives from local small towns, middle class yuppies, and moms with kids who don't have any particular agenda, except to stop the Westboro people from disrupting their target--protesting TOGETHER.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Thank you Westboro Church! In some weird way you've managed to piss enough people off that they are crossing political and doctrinaire lines to work together to make sure that you don't get what you want.
Hardly anybody reports this stuff either. The news said that there was a counter demonstration against the Westboro Church but nobody talked about how diverse the counter demonstration was.

Very glad to hear of effective organizing against the Westboro culties. It is not the law, but the willingness of the people to stand up for what's right, by extra-legal means if necessary, and that we can reasonably turn to in cases like this.

If they want their first ammendment rights, so be it. Then level the playing field. Deny them police protection and let other Americans express their first ammendment right to beat the crap out of them. Let society rule on this one to determine what is acceptable behaviour and what isn't. They are like a bunch of children hiding behind Mama's apron and still taunting the other kids. Remove Mama and let them settle the score themselves. Then you'll see how fast the rules change.
This ruling just proves that you cannot legislate common sense.

If it walks like a duck and quack like a duck...don't call it defending your constitution..its quacky lunacy to do so.
The French have figured it out so much wiser.
"Dior fired Galliano, who also faces criminal charges in France for allegedly making racial insults.
French prosecutors said Galliano will stand trial sometime between April and June. If convicted, he could face up to six months in prison and the equivalent of about $31,000 in fines."
I read that French law prohibits making public slur statements against a person based on their ethnicity, race, religion (and a few more conditions that civilized societies have figured out are wrong to be used against minorities). Unfortunately, sex(sexual orientation and gender including transexuals) are not written in to the French law. I'm not sure if it is constitutional or the law.
Why not fix your constitution?

Take it from me, tenni me luffly.. as a regular visitor to, and someone who loves and adores, France, and for the most part, am very fond of the French.. they havent got it together that well at all.. there is a huge gulf between what the law says and the law does when it comes to racism... and the French are no more immune to racism than any other people across the globe..
I cannot say what is written into French law about sex, sexual orientation or gender, but at the very minimum they are held to the letter of European law which is very progressive and allows no member state to allow discrimination of any kind against people on those grounds.. I can also say.. that Paris and several of France's large cities have very vibrant gay communities and some of the best gay clubs I know... they also have civil unions giving them much the same rights as married people.. unfortunately recently the French constitutional court upheld the ban on gay marriage, so not all in the garden is rosy and as with racism, gay bashing and discrimination does go on no matter what the law says, as it does in every country which has anti discriminatory law.. the battle for hearts and minds continues..:)
