You absolutely must get a tripod to hold the camera. Flash is bad. So have enough other lighting. Then use the timer function that lets you position yourself before the camera triggers the actual picture. A tripod is cheap. I bought mine in Target for about $40. For posting to this site, use photo edit software to create jpg files of the correct size that maintain good resolution.
If you want to make real art with your photography, I can not help you.

What will it be used for???. Best lighting for the male body is strong side lighting if you want to show of your body, but most of all, pay attention to the back ground, it is just as importen as the light, a messy background will screw up an otherwise good picture. Let us see what you come up with.

Just keep taking pictures till you get the one you want, it cost nothing.

A lot of cameras now have an accessory available - a remote shutter. You just set up the camera a few metres away, pose, and just press the button! Some digital cameras even have an LCD screen that can be turned so you can see it even facing the lens...

All of the the photos in my profile are from my webcam. Most are with natural window light. The webcam was on a low tripod, at a low angle.
I can view the photos from my computer and click when I like OR set the camera for a few second delay.
A lot of getting a good photo is getting interesting light that models the subject. That means showing highlights and shadows that show shape and texture. Good lighting ratios are also important. You want enough light to expose the image properly. The best light is a bit from the side say 45 degrees or so left or right from the camera. The light on most of my shots is from a shaded window that diffused the light..and it bounced around the room a bit. I was careful to control the contrast also. Too flat and the image becomes mushy.. too contrast and I think it becomes unattractive.
Lower contrast and soft light makes for softer shadows and a more even and pleasing light..in my estimation.
Most people show too much room and not enough of the subject. Zoom in or crop the shot. You want to show the subject not the surroundings.. unless they are important for some reason. BUT in your case You are the subject and the surrounding area probably doesn't matter too much.
I'd love to take photos for people who want pics for their online persona. That'd be cool :)
Good luck;) We'd love to see the results!

With proper placement a self-timer on a digital camera will work well. I have put the camera on a chair and posed myself on my couch, and got some nice pics, but the best thing is a tripod. You can buy a desktop tripod for cheap too.
Something like this: http://www.sourcingmap.com/red-foldable-digital-camera-tripod-desk-bracket-stand-p-76947.html
This works excellent, and is quite adjustable too. All the digital cameras have a threaded fitting on the bottom that would fit it. So do most cam corders too :).

And go artsy-fartsy and use black and white pictures.
Art is nothing but a pornographic picture in black and white

If you care to look at my profile pics you will see shots I took myself that look pretty good.Like someone else said tho, take a lot and trash the bad ones.I took maybe 10 or 15 and only 3 or 4 look good enough that I would share them anywhere. I used some colored lights I already had for another purpose, instead of using existing light or softer white lights of some sort, and I think they look pretty sexy. Adding a light behind you in addition to side and/or front lights actually helps too, as it reflects all around kind of making a soft glow, although I didn't do that in that case. Go look in a mirror sometime when there is a light coming from behind and maybe above you. You'll think 'Hey I look pretty good today!' Ha! Good luck!
