now to put the cat amongst the pidgeons.......coughs a few feathers!!!!

Is being bi just an umbrella term for all the other "terms" that dont fit into hetro, homo, lesbian peg holes?

At this years bicon in London there were polyamorous peeps, cross dressers etc surely these are sub cultures in their own right and therefore are not exclusively (if at all) bi cultures. and therefore technichally not bi ?

discuss.....

p.s im not stirring (as I usually do)

I'd write that technically that if you are sexually attracted to both men and women that you are bisexual. CD's may be bisexual if they are sexually attracted to men and women. Some may be hetero and their CD aspect just a sexual fetish? aspect for them. Gay CD's seem to be somewhat different as well.(drag queen concept and exaggeration if not ridicule of women..not sure but they're not bi) Polyamour is just a difference between monogamy and polyamour. I think that you may be a bisexual and poly or monogamous. You may also be hetero and poly or mono. You may be gay and poly or mono. My own personal perspective is that bisexuals may be better off being poly rather than mono but to each their own.

I'd put Pansexuals in its own category though as it seem broader than bisexuality. There seems to be some vagueness or debate about whether it falls under bisexuality. Personally, it doesn't from my perspective. I see pansexuals as being attracted to men, women and transitioning transexuals but that is just my viewpoint.

I understand what you mean though. It does seem at times that some try to place themselves in this category but have an added aspect that is difficult to identify with. Its a bit baffling at times.

I concur with above.

It seems at times that the "inbetween" label of being bi is adopted by others so that they too can be accepted as a mainstream group.

Personally I am bi, and proud of it...but sometimes feel overwhelmed when fringe groups take on the mantle of being bi so as to legitimise themselves....there goes another pidgeon lol,

Maybe not, but I think bisexuals might be accepted more by many in the "mainstream" than other types. I only say that because I've noticed my wife and her family- at least the ones that know I'm queer- always refer to me as bisexual, even after I refer to myself as homosexual.

They tend to be religious- right anti- homo folks so I think just being a few degrees short of being fully gay or lez is a bit more acceptable to them.

I believe bi IS a mainstream group...ask any one in the street to name a sexuallity and they will usually name the following......... hetrosexual, homosexual, lesbian, bi and then maybe trans but the first 4 are a given, well in the UK that is.

Ok. I was using a different definition of mainstream. Mainstream to me is the 90% or more of the population that isn't homosexual. I think there are likely many more bisexuals in the world than strictly homosexual people. Some bisexuals are very closeted, or won't admit it to even themselves, though, so there's no way I can be sure of that.

closet bisexuals can be active though....... my ex wife and i are both bi...we still play together but no one knows in the local community as I would loose business...but we have had some damn fine times corrupting younger females and males (:three:)

Yes, they certainly can be, but most closeted bisexuals are near impossible to quantify. I've corresponded with some sexually active bi guys that are scared to death of anyone finding out. I'm sure others are so scared of someone finding out they won't connect themselves to anything bisexual- even joining this site anonymously, for example.

I've regularly participated in polls- Rasmussen and Zogby polls, for example- where I've identified myself as gay or bisexual ( I nearly always check bisexual). I suspect a lot of even sexually active closeted bisexuals won't even do that.

Interesting note on bi being mainstream. This past year I dealt w/ an assortment of doctors/nurses. Part of the whole treatment bit involving screening question sheets. None of them flinched to learn I am bi. And most made a point to note "we remain confidential." This is in the States. Not all medical persons are wretched trolls.

The term bi refers only to people who are bisexual and nobody else.

People will argue definitions and say that pansexuals or omnisexuals are the same as bisexuals which does make sense.

The terms bisexual is pretty mainstream even here in the states.

If you see a doctor or other medical professionals they should know that you are bisexual.

If you are worried about privacy they are required by law not to tell anything about any of their patients that they have ever seen.

Back to the original question....

Bisexual means just that... bisexual (sexually attracted to two genders)

The confusion ensues when bisexuals also identify with another label such as CD, poly, kinky, etc.

When I first joined this site, I was amazed at the number of people here that also identify as cross dressers. After inquiring of a few people here if there is a connection between crossdressing and bisexuality, I was told no, there is not. The only connection I can find is that people who have the the courage to identify as one group on the net, have the courage to come out in other ways too.

Lately, conversation in chat has increasingly been on the kinky side, depending on who is present. Does that mean that all bisexuals are kinky? Not by a long shot. But.... people who are already out on line as bi are more likely to admit to being kinky. Or.... perhaps, people who have been brought up being taught that bisexuality or homosexuality is wrong (kinky), then since they are bi, then kinky is not that far away. They figure "might as well try this too".

I personally identify as pansexual, poly, kinky, sub, female, short, bbw, teacher, lover, little girl, slut, bottom, top, Rock, bisexual, partner, lesbian.... etc. Just depends on what group I'm in.

Damn, I gotta start hanging around in chat more!! lol I'm not kinky, I just have an oral fixation, or would that be considered a fetish?? Sigh...I'm so confused..lol

kinky is not just for the mainstream 3 (het, hom, lesb) but for all.

however, what is one mans meat is another mans poison.

what one finds "kinky" another may find purverse or downright disgusting or intollerable.

I know I am BI but feel that BI is becoming a safety net for all the "fringe" groups...not simply those who choose to sleep with both sexes but those who do not fit into the typical groups of Hetero or Gay/Lesbianism.

oooops...someones going to throw their teddies lol.
