Florida friends, it is time to start watching "Invest 98," the next storm behind Hurricane Fiona. This morning, September 1, it is an "area of disturbed weather" off the coast of Africa, but unlike Danielle, Earl, and Fiona, is projected to travel much closer to due west. The last two hurricanes to form, Earl and Fiona, each track closer to the US than did Danielle. Invest 98 looks like it's going to get into the Gulf of Mexico, crossing Florida first.

This is one for all of us in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and initially at least, Texas, to watch. After living through Frederick, Camille, Erin, Opal, Ivan, David, Georges, Katrina, and a few others, I know well the advantages of tuning in on potential threats early on.

I bought my plywood futures and calls on Home Depot stock. I'm ready for the storm season.

Seriously, as a Californian I can't imagine facing hurricanes on a regular basis. We have earthquakes but thankfully not as frequently as storms.

Good luck down there.
