It's not a bad idea, just keep in mind that the person on the other end might be recording it, and even if they don't give it out, maybe someone hacking their computer might, so be cautious.
I did that in the early days of the internet, was it Microsoft Messenger? It was surprisingly boring and tedious. About 20 letters to describe who you were and what you were looking for. Perhaps things have changed since then. Good luck.
