A Nigerian Scammer Walks Among Us ! *gasp*

    Hey folks !

Just a general warning here. I was contacted thru the bi.com e-mail by someone calling herself Chelsea Montel. She has a profile here, but it is not at all filled out. Over the course of a just a few I.M.s it became obvious that something was "off" about her, (for one thing I thought it a bit strange that someone would profess desperate undying love and devotion in the very first e-mail. lol) and I was just waiting for the moment she asked for money. She claims to be British born (but possesses only the most rudimentary language skills.) but currently traveling in Nigeria, ( BIG red flag ) where she is on a buying trip looking for historical artifacts.
Darn her luck ! Wouldn't you know it ? She's having a problem with the local bank, and just needs a little financial help gathering enough money to fly back home, so she can be with me, and fill my life with unspeakable joy ! (and valuable historical artifacts, I might add.) I think I'll go wait breathlessly at the airport now. I'm sure she'll be along any minute now. I should probably bring along a big truck to accomodate the artifacts, don't you think ?
I guess they haven't heard that the Nigerian e-mail schemes are a bit overplayed here. lol Just beware.

We had one like that, too. Her profile claimed her name was Rose fro Tampa. Her english was very good though and her(?) scam was that she was on a buying trip to the ivory coast where she ran into financial troubles. Seemed very odd that any person who was on a buying trip for a jewelry wholesaler would not have everything already set up with proper contingencies in place.

I guess they figure that because they can scam a few of us, they don't figure that the rest of us are smart enough to catch them in the act.

    Hi Not2str8, hi FalconAngel

Thanks for your warnings. Don't these scam messages crack you up! Each one is more outlandish than the last. The thing is, people must fall for them. The scammers wouldn't send them out otherwise.

Wishing you both all the best.

It's purely a numbers game. Sure most of us figure it out, but even one sucker is a decent payoff for millions of emails and I can tell ya they're a lot more common than one in a million

may i suggest that while waiting, you have blue suited armed men wait there with you with chrome bracelets to give her as tokens of your affection when the two of you finally meet. i'm sure she'll also love the chauffered ride and police escort

And the problem with the majority of these type of scams is that they generally originate from third world contries, Europe or China where the tracking is difficult if not almost impossible. Some of the countries do not have extriditions laws or are lax in assisting US investigators in locating the criminals (corruption). So be forewarned: Don't become a desperate victim. Delete the email and place the person on your iggy list. Also report the person to Drew so he can remove them from the rolls.

I saw that very post before.

First red flag: Too many questions.

Second red flag: Too many personal questions.

Third red flag: Too impersonal and canned.

Yes, its happened to several people on this site before. It gets on my nerves, because it makes me suspicious of EVERY PM I get, and then ppl get pissed off because I'm over-cautious.

If its definitely a scammer, then report it to drew and get him to cancel their account. It probably won't solve the problem, but its a start. I do hope the authorities start taking this crap more seriously in the future.

I get those e-mails all the time on Yahoo! Mail...I don't like them. I deleted an account because of it and it had my BEST internet friend EVER on it. Now I re-signed up for it today, it turns out he IMed me in October 2006, but he hasn't IMed me ever since...I hope he still goes on the file as I sent him 4 IMs hoping he come on and a friend request too. Every day I will pray he comes back on, even for a day or 2. But its been nearly 2 years...

I got a few spam from people in Nigeria on Myspace (when I had a acct) all the time.

I never got one on here yet tho. But I usually don't read PM messages unless I know the person and OR have seen them post on the forums before

I read 'em but often don't reply. Especially if its some dude with a profile full of naked pictures who's never made a single post on the forum

Myspace.... always found it funny when your profile says your a lesbian, everything in it clearly says so.

You get a scammer message from a guy who thinks your a STRAIGHT WOMAN. lol

Sometimes its attempting to reply and say something like:
"Oh thanks for the number.. Im gonna give it to every telemarker site I come across" lol or something like that!!

    OR

My friend got one (after confriming with me if it was a scam or not.. and it was) she replied "What makes you think I have money?" lol she never got a answer. But I did tell her she shouldn't reply cause that could mean they have a working address to sent more scam to.

Not every scammer is nigerian and not every nigerian is a scammer. The topic is quite upsetting cos I am a nigerian. Not a scammer!

Because its silly to generalize. And its easy to not to pay any attention to it, until its about you! If I said scottish people are rude, or germans are racist or americans are pompous...how would you feel?

Re: A Nigerian Scammer Walks Among Us ! *gasp*

I dont mind that u have brought this thread back 2 life, fair. This site used to be heaving with political threads and it was in my opinion the better for it.. in recent years this has almost ceased in the face of a persistent onslaught of vindictive trollery aided by the disappearance of the owner... and the topic racism was 2 the fore... it isn't the topic I object to, far from it, not even the resuscitation of thread, but I do think if u have something say then it should be said in a new thread for 2day... matter of opinion I kno...

...I would b on ur side, Fair.. I have a half sister part of whose ancestry is from ur part of the world (Ghana) and whom I have learned to love very much since we first got to know each other a few years ago. I am not and never have been a racist, and do sympathise with the sentiments espoused. I don't know what has changed since 2007 and feel a contemporary thread for 2015 would be of more value..

O.. btw.. our trait is s'posed 2 b that we r careful wiv money.. ok.. mean and stingy wiv the stuff. O yea.. and that we r dour and a miserable lot of lickle humour... bad diet, bad teeth, violent, drunks... God!!! Don't have much going for us do we?
