I've not been 'professionally' waxed, but have experimented with hot waxing on myself. (with a little help from my wife) Waxing is supposed to remove hair down to the root, and it's often claimed - with some exaggeration - that it leaves you smooth for 'weeks'. In my case, it leaves me with exceptionally smooth skin for about a week, and then I can feel the grit of stubble around that time. But the recommendations are that hair be 1/4" long or more before it's long enough to be removed by waxing. (and that's one reason that I rely on shaving -- I don't want to let it get that long, I want to be hair-free as much as possible, all the time!)
In my experience, that's similar to using a depilatory. First time, it seems to do a good job. But when it starts back as stubble, Nair and the others won't do anything. The hair has to be long enough for it to melt the protruding hair shaft. It just doesn't seem to be effective on stubble.
