I used a "Flash card" that said "I suck" while sitting in a remote parking lot at a public park. Shit, if I knew the answer to this, I'd be filthy rich. If I've learned nothing else, it's that you can never really know who you can proposition or who's going to proposition you and that "gaydar" thing doesn't work all that much; I can't begin to count the number of times I guessed wrong about a guy and it was totally embarrassing or, yeah, it got violent (and my nose has gone unbroken). If there's a "best practice" in this, it's to engage the guy in conversation and... see which way the wind might blow while not coming across as being aggressive if you're the one making the proposition; if you get the sense that a guy's hitting on you - and he's not being blatantly obvious about it - then the trick is... to listen so you can learn some stuff that'll work toward you making an informed decision to go/no go with him.
It's all one hell of a judgement call. Hell, you get a few drinks in a guy and there's no telling what might come to the surface but I think that if the conversation heads in the sexual direction - and it's been my experience that a lot of them do - this is the 'critical moment' where either he's going to ask if you've ever done something with a guy or you'll be able to ask him something like, oh, "If you could get your dick sucked right now, would that be something you'd be interested in?" In that bar setting, it always gets my attention if I'm sitting there, there open seats all along the bar and some guy comes over and... sits one stool away from me and when he could have sat anywhere else. Maybe he just wants to drink and talk... and maybe more than that but it's still a judgement call and what might work in one situation may or may not work in another...

Look at my avatar. When dressed, the red heels worked well, particularly when combined with black stockings. Slacks, skirt or a dress didn't seem to matter.
