ANYTHING EXCEPT VAGINA - By Betty Dodson
Many people use the term "vagina" when referring to the female genitals, which is incorrect. Technically speaking, the vagina is the birth canal, so using this term leaves out the other parts of a woman's sex organ. More importantly, saying "vagina" reduces women's sexuality to the pro-creative model where our genitals shrink to an anatomical nonentity and the clitoris, women's most important source of arousal, is ignored. While penis-vagina sex produces orgasm for men and gets women pregnant, it is not how most women experience the pleasure of orgasm.
To celebrate our sexuality, we need to use the term genitals, vulva, pussy, cunt, twat, box, quim, clit, or snatch. Anything except vagina. Some terms are sexier than others so it's up to each individual to choose their favorite one to say aloud during a sexual encounter. It's true that a lot of women, and men too, find the word pussy easy to say with only a mild sexual charge. But I love the old Anglo Saxon word cunt. It's strong and sexy at the same time. When I'm teaching, I use the softer term vulva or genitals at first. Later on when my client is more relaxed, I kid around making humorous references to her pussy, or that she is a sex pig, or finally, that she has a hungry cunt. This light heartedness breaks through the ancient shame surrounding our genitals.
